Kenny Robinson to active roster

Three of my favorite picks of this draft in terms of suprising people were ..Chinn, YGM, and Robinson.

Chinn for the reasons he's already showed.

YGM because at the time I thought his floor was an improved version of Wes Horton. He also gives me a Greg Hardy type of vibe. Looks promising so far, we'll see.

Robinson because he looks to identify the ball in the air. And if he's not in range he's atleast going to punish you. Which imo we've been missing at safety since Mitchell. Idunno if he's ready yet, but I'd like to see him and Chinn on the field together.

"IF" he ends up panning out, whoever called the shots on this draft absolutely killed it. And something tells me Hurney played the backseat for the most part. I do think this was 1 of the 2 picks Hurney did make. The other being Stanley Thomas Oliver.

So the two least promising players were Hurney’s idea? Lol

Bruh Hurney had the final say. This was Hurney’s draft.

So, what happened? According to Joe Person at the Athletic, head coach Matt Rhule was much more interested in trading down for more picks but in the end general manager Marty Hurney wanted Brown and overruled him.

Here’s what Person said last week on WFNZ.

“I was told that Matt Rhule was very open and eager to trade back in the first round. He wanted to add a couple more picks if they could find that sweet spot maybe in the teens somewhere and that Marty was kind of like you know what? Derrick Brown’s our guy. We’re not moving.”

Hurney wanted Chinn as well.

As for general manager Marty Hurney, there was no ifs, ands, or buts about it. He wanted Chinn and to do so, they had to make a move to go up and get him. Had they waited, he would've likely been off of the board by the time the Panthers were on the clock in the third round.

"He was a guy that we liked since the first time that we put eyes on him and he just impressed us more and more as the process went through," Hurney said. "We had him drafted fairly highly and we just thought that he was too good to take the chance of seeing if he could get through six more picks to get to us. We thought that we had a fair deal for both sides to go up and get him and thought that he was a player that could really help our defense grow. I think when you feel that strongly about a guy, sometimes you just don't want to take the chance to see him get there. I don't think he would've gotten to us in the third round and we started making calls and we got Seattle to make the deal."

This draft wasn’t all Hurney. I’m sure he was involved in the first round (where he usually has success). Kenny Robinson seems pretty out of the ordinary to be Hurney not to mention Rhule coached against him in Baylor vs UWV, and obviously Roy was Rhule. YGM and Chinn seem to fit the Rhule model of high motor, smart players who can play multiple positions. Hurney is going to say we wanted these players and he was happy with who they got, because that is the smart thing to do. What else is he going to say, “I was against drafting this guy, but the guy under me, Rhule, wanted him?”

It tells how Rhule specifically wanted defensive players who played hard and fast (sounds like Chinn to me) and wanted to go heavy on defense. Mainly you can tell it was different than past Panthers drafts in which Hurney participated in.

The previous coaches had different philosophies.
Rivera wanted 3-4 players so Hurney drafted players that fit into a 3-4 scheme.

The lengths people go to discredit Hurney...

Just watched the video. Never in the interview did Rhule say “I” wanted defensive players. He said “we” then gave Hurney credit for coming up with the plan.

I mean he is going to give credit to the GM regardless, because technically that’s his boss. The fact that all of these rookies are getting show much playing time shows you they are Rhule’s guys. Brown, Chinn, and Pride all have had solid playing time since week 1 with Roy getting rotational snaps as well. You think Hurney just randomly picked a DT in Roy that happened to play under Rhule? These Free Agent signings like Robbie Anderson that happened to play for Rhule I’m college and have specifically said he is the reason they came here must also be Hurney’s doing as well since he is the “GM.”  I mean Rhule says “we” brought in FAs on offense we liked....   I’m not super down on Hurney, but I think he has been somewhat nerfed down this offseason knowing we are signing a new GM soon and he will either have a different position on be somewhere else.

I mean I have articles by NFL reporters that proves my point. There hasn’t been an article or quote that says Rhule had more control or overruled Hurney.

GMs around the league sign players the head coach is familiar with. For example Hurney signed Legedu Naanee, Richie Brockel in 2011 and Tolbert in 2012.
