How did he make it through the coaching staff change? I thought for sure he was one of Rivera's boys.

You can't fix everything in one off-season, but I'll agree that I didn't expect to see him on the roster this year and was disturbed by how much praise he got from Rhule during camp. I don't know if Rhule just saw there wasn't any better option available and tried to boost his confidence to coach him up or if Manhertz looks a lot better in practice than he does on game day.

I feel like this is one of those plays that casual fans think is a horrible play by Manhertz but coaches would say he did a pretty good job.  He basically washed the CB all the way to the outside, close to the sideline.  I would put that more on the RB, as others have said.  Maybe he didn't have enough time to cut back inside (although I'm sure CMC could have easily stopped on a dime and pulled that off), but he also seems to extend too far towards the sideline on that swing route.

Regardless, there was some pretty bad blocking all around on that play.  If that CB didn't make the tackle, there were still at least 3 Bears defenders waiting for him.

You are right.

Trent Cannon sucks.  I don't blame the coaches because what more could they do?  McCaffrey, Bonnafon, and Samuel all out, and I think this was at a point where Mike Davis was on the sidelines with whatever was going on.  But man Cannon didn't look like an NFL player.

Maybe you wanna see Manhertz hold onto that block for a little longer, but it isn't like that's an easy block for him to make.  CB was already driving to the outside.  Cannon should have done a better job preparing to cut back inside.  Bears read that well so #97 or #58 probably still make a play on it, but he'd have at least gotten 2 or 3 yards.

The average Huddler doesn't seem to have a good grasp on evaluating o-line play...which obviously I'll admit I don't either, but at least I feel like I can apply some general nuance to what I'm seeing in most cases.  Same thing on that Chris Reed block in the second level that Jeremy posted as a "gaffe" last week that probably received a good bit of praise from coaches.

The funny thing is, most Huddlers rightfully question sites like PFF on their grading, with rationale like "Well, they don't know the scheme and who was supposed to be blocking who and who was supposed to be occupying which gaps" etc. but then they'll openly critique a singular GIF like this with no idea what the play design called for.  Self-awareness is a rare commodity on here lol.
