Defense is two starters away from being very good.

Struggle on terms of putting up points, sure. Struggle in terms of committing three turnovers? Nah, that's a death knell. Nearly half of the Bears' 8 turnovers on the season came by way of the Panthers. The D did a tremendous job simply to have us in the game and then got multiple stops late to give our offense opportunities and we failed to convert a pass to a wide open receivers for a walk in TD and then threw a perfect pass to a Bears' defender.

Well, if people are going to moan about DJ Moore not being able to turnaround and make a one handed left handed catch.....I think it it reasonable to talk about other aspects of the game.

I'll give an example of something that stood out, the Bears opening drive  to start the 2nd half.  13-6.  Panthers have them 3rd and long on there own 29 yard line.  Entire DL collapses into the QB at the Bears 20.   That is where all our talent is.   Perfect.  But, an athletic Foles squirts out, then proceeds to scramble slowly 15 yards from where he pops out to pick up the first down.  Well, they move the ball some more.    End result of failing to put Foles in the dirt on his own 20 on 3rd and long?   Panthers end up starting there next drive backed up on their own 3 yard line for that shitshow debacle down there.

I mean if we are going to fuss about DJ Moore and that catch....I think that is reasonable sequence to bring up.

I'm definitely not fussing about Moore. My only issue with Moore was the drop on the crossing route. That was a hospital ball in the endzone and a bad throw by Teddy when he was wide open. I don't know if it was a miscommunication between him and Teddy or if Teddy overthrew it, but either way - the guy is wide open. Throw the safe ball. If you try to hit him perfectly in stride, just the slightest overthrow leads to what we saw.

Rhule already commented on the 4th and 2 ball and said there was a miscommunication. Mentioned DJ’s route.

The ball in the back of the end zone was not a “hospital ball”. DJ was running a crossing route to the back pylon and Teddy was under pressure, he put the ball up for DJ and it hit him right in the hands. DJ has to catch that. Anyone who plays/played WR would tell you there’s nothing wrong with that ball. Any WR worth a damn wants a chance to make a play in the end zone.

I wasn't implying you were doing it.  Just talk I have read going hard at him.

We held the Bears to 261 yards. They average 313. We held them to 23 points despite three turnovers. They average 21. We gained 303 yards. The Bears give up an average of 337. We scored 16 points. They give up an average of 19. When you turn the ball over three times while failing to gain your opponent's defense's average yards allowed nor score their average points allowed, you certainly didn't lose a close game due to your defense.

Our D is 7th in the NFL in takeaways but only 8 teams have turned it over more than our offense (Teddy has accounted for 6 of those 8 turnovers). Right now we're losing games primarily because our offense isn't converting yards into points. Secondarily because we're turning the ball over too much. The worst issue on defense rank no higher than third on the list.

I just don't see how anyone is blaming much of anything on the D as a unit right now. Bash Whitehead and Boston all you want for all I care, but as a whole our much maligned defense coming into the season with the coordinator no one wanted is outperforming our more talented offense with the coordinator everyone wanted.

Whitehead has a pff rating of 27. That is at the bottom of the league. He is absolutely terrible and they know it. He doesn't even play 3rd downs now. Can't stop the run at all. I am sure kuechly is pulling his hair out watching him play.

Whitehead is so bad you might as well just play with 10 men instead...

Middle Linebacker.

Free Safety.

If these two positions can be upgraded this offseason, this defense will rank top 10 for many years. I a not even talking superstars at FS and MLB. I am just talking average starters in the NFL. That would be a huge step up.

Won’t matter unless we field a top 10 oline. But then again there is always the chance we defy decades of NFL playoff history, set records and make it with a below average oline... but not sure anyone would take those odds.

Went all defense in the last draft, this team has to build that oline if it ever wants to truly compete and it’s perfect timing.
