Do We Still Hate Hurney?

The Mike Davis signing last year should give people pause about always jumping to conclusions.  How many people were saying last year and during the offseason that they couldn't believe we gave this JAG a 2 year/$6 million contract?  And they couldn't believe again that dumba$% Hurney didn't cut him in the offseason to save that money.

Literally the only thing that turned the Davis pickup from a terrible signing to a great signing was the fact that CMC got injured and the coaching staff was actually forced to play him.  Is that on Hurney?  Kind of begs the question, how many other signings could have been viewed differently if they weren't rotting away on the bench due to a coaching staff that was notorious for horrible talent recognition?

Of course we still hate Hurney.  This is the Huddle, we hate everybody.

If we lose the next three many will be back to hating Rhule.  Some hate Bridgewater because he is not Cam.  Some hate Cam because he is not Jake.  Everybody hates Clausen to this day.  Some hate Rivera.  Most hate Fox.  We hate Von Miller.  We hate Jerome Boger.  Put Mother Teresa in a football jersey or official's shirt and we will hate her.

It is what the place does.  We hate each other.  I even hate myself! :poison:

Enough levity.

Hurney worries me to this day.  He has a history of getting bright ideas that he has found a diamond in the rough, somebody that the 31 other GMs underestimate, and the next thing you know we have what he thought was a diamond but instead was a lump of coal.  Then dealing with the cap repercussions later, if it is not some college player that we drafted in round two or three (and maybe traded up to do it) that everybody else was debating about drafting in the sixth or signing as an UDFA.

I really have questions about how much say he had in this last draft.  It was far too disciplined.  I'm not saying he was shut out of it at all, just that he many not have been given the final say.

He may have a role in the organization, I just don't want it to be the traditional GM role.  And maybe it isn't.  On the bright side, his name is not Dimitroff.

But if you have a coaching staff that knows what kinds of players they want and a cap & contract specialist to consult on those matters and a competent scouting department then maybe the situation only requires a guy to manage the interaction between these functions. Maybe he's suited for that.

Part of why I bashed the Davis signing wasn't necessarily because of the contract itself, it was because of the contract paired with the coach. Under Rivera it made no sense. CMC wasn't coming off the field. Period. It was wasted cap space for that reason. We drafted a rookie in the 5th that was never going to see the field. We had other needs than a guy who's chance to contribute was 0.

Things may operate differently under Rhule and maybe Hurney may change some more. But under Fox and Rivera both, he never had the ability to assemble a team for more than a 1 year run and that's what we need from a GM. His job isn't just to recognize talent on the field, it's the ability to see how the coach and the players will be able to work together. In that area I feel he has sorely lacked.

Didn't you spend last season arguing that we shouldn't get rid of Ron Rivera because we might get a worse coach?

How's that working out?

Honestly I don't remember, i wouldnt think so as I've have not liked Ron for awhile now but I have defended Hurney for awhile. I've definitely argued for Cam and Hurney but id say they did the right thing bringing in Bridgewater. I was happy when Rivera was fired and excited for Rhule as soon as I heard him give his introductory speech. In fact I don't believe I've ever liked Ron that much.

I wanted to cut Davis, cause why on earth would you waste 3 million on 20 snaps for the year. Panthers have to be league leaders in RB salary, thanks Marty.

Marty didnt sign nhim tho, he was a wavier claim form last season. Bears cut him before week 10, so he didnt count against the comp formula. So he sat on the bench the whole 2019 ending. while playing him 200,000 per game. I never understood why brady didnt use both on the field, like it was against the rules or something. Same gos for Dwill and stew, play them both!! Stew could be a FB and had average hands for a RB.
