When CMC comes back

What should this offense look like?

I hope he splits carries with Mike Davis 60/40 and gets more touches in the passing game with underneath throws. Maybe even line up with more split back sets.

I think it’s a real positive that Davis has shown he can make an impact and can help minimize the wear and tear on CMC.  This would ensure he can make plays with fresh legs throughout the season.

I actually don't think we change much, except give Davis and Bonnefon a few more touches/snaps. Our offense has clicked a little bit better the past 2 games but I don't think it has anything to do with McC. The OL is clicking and Brady is getting more comfortable with calling plays against NFL defenses. Reason for these 2 wins has been improvement on D. I don't think the O has actually been much better these last 2 games than the first 2 games.

The problem we've had in the past was that nobody not named McCaffrey gave opposing DCs any reason to be hugely concerned.

I still wouldn't say we're to the point where any other players are striking fear on the other side, but it would be nice if we could get there.

I'd actually be interested in seeing if Brady calls some plays with 2 RBs on the field and takes advantage of CMC as a route runner. Davis seems big enough to block should the defense have a light box and CMC is a better receiver than Samuel. It could be a good addition to the offense.

I disagree. We’re able to milk the clock by running the ball effectively and putting together demoralizing drives that take 10 - 15 plays. Davis was a huge part of that yesterday and would hate to see him have a significantly diminished role when he returns

I think there has to be a balance.

CMC is a phenomenal talent.  It doesn't have to ride on his shoulders.  If CMC is feeling it and popping off big gains on a defense, you don't take him out to spread the touches, but if you need to change things up, Davis is there.  Reggie is a great compliment to CMC as well.

CMC is still the man in our offense, but if we can keep setting up 10+ play drives a game, there's more than enough touches to go around.  We just have to keep being efficient on 3rd down!

Then the others should get good matchups

I'm for a steady rotation of all 3....Mike & Reggie have proven they can run, add in CMC and then ratchet the pace up to a LMU/Kimble/Gathers level and run the other team off the field week-in, week-out!

My sense is Brady is going to find playing time for a whole bunch of guys...

I'll say this.

I like what I've seen out of Davis AND Bonnafon.

Reggie looks a lot more like CMC than Davis does. But Davis is a grinder that wears out the line to make room for guys like CMC and Reggie.

I'd love to keep all three in the rotation.

TB100%H - We should trade CMC. We should have traded him before he ever signed an extension. I called it a bad move then and I still believe it was. If what we're seeing now is an indicator of anything, it is that you can have success without having the highest paid RB in the league.

But CMC isn’t just any running back. He is a legitimate threat in the passing game and can break the game open with a simple screen pass. Trading him would be insane

Not if the haul was worth it.

Davis and Bonnafon have held their own when given the opportunity for the Panthers.

I like CMC and admit what a special talent he is as much as anyone. But if someone offers me two first round picks and some other player(s) that can help solidify my roster for 3-4 years, the deal is done.

I also feel as tho Davis + Bonafon can replace CMC.

    • If we are going to spend the money anyway, maybe the signing is not as bad as it seems.  Mays outperformed Corbett (before his injury and if you go back to last year, Corbett has been below average) and then Christensen took the job and Mays quickly took it from him and never looked back.  He could use improvement reaching to the next level (LBs) but picking up stunts and blitzes---he was surprisingly good.  Run blocking needs some work, but he is 25.  Corbett, in my view, should be G/C depth and if Mays steps back, he is there.  Mays should start because this team is building for the future and 30 year old players are not building blocks.  We shall see.  That is how I think about it, but there are many factors we do not know. Having said that, I like what Zavala is doing, and I do not want to bring in someone who would take opportunities away from him.  Zavala was really good at RG down the stretch, and in limited duty, was awesome. In fact, we have a guard from the PS who played briefly and did well, but he only played a few plays.  He is 25 and I recall that fans of his former team were upset when we signed him.   Maybe as the backup center only (Corbett).  You need 2 centers to run practices efficiently.  I cannot say enough about the OL coaches on this staff.  What they have done is overshadowed by the Lewis / Hunt signing.  Mays, Ekwonu, Zavala--impressive growth.
