My opinion of Phil Snow

Rivera was a good defensive coach....when he had he personnel to play what he wanted to play.  He was not going to change what he wanted, even at halftime.  He was not going to adjust to his personnel.  If the opposing offense was finding a way to exploit his personnel or his scheme, his adjustment was just to do it harder or do more of it.

That was why the pseudo switch to the 3-4 wreaked of desperation.

On limited NFL returns thus far, Snow appears to be the polar opposite of that.  So does Rhule.  Give them the roster, let them figure out what their strengths and limitations are, and they adapt to try and get the most out of it.  If something isn't working in a game, they will adjust to something else.  None of that guarantees wins, but it does mean they are going to steal a win or two when Rivera would have been talking about missed opportunities.

Sample size is way too small obviously but everyone said our defense was going to be historically bad before the season started. To hold the Chargers to 16 and finally get some real pressure on the quarterback and force takeaways, we finally felt like a real defense. I'm hoping that's Snow and the team taking a step forward although it very well could be an anomalous blip in a disastrous season defensively. Hoping for the former of course.

I want to see how he varies the defense from week to week to account for different offenses and how disciplined we stay. Whether we play hard and play together without blaming each other like some teams do. He said it is a process. So let's keep moving forward

So I just watched my first interview of Phil Snow. First I watched the post game interview after the win Sunday against the Chargers, then I watched an interview before the Chargers game. I have to say... I am very impressed with this guy, I really think he will make our defense better and better as the season progresses. "We'll keep hitting that rock until it cracks", was what he said when a reporter asked about Brian Burns development in the interview pre Chargers game. Then we all saw what Burns did in that game. I really like this guy, when you look at him, when you hear him talk and analyze offenses based on questions you can tell this guy is the prototypical defensive coordinator. Let's not sleep on Phil Snow, there's something to this guy... just a "gut" feeling.

I’m sure that Phil Snow will sleep easier knowing you approve of him.  Sleep deeply Mr Snow.

Is it safe to say our old (new) dc is doing way better than our young (new) oc who was so coveted by many ?

It is way to soon to conclude that.  In other words, after three games, it is not safe to say much of anything.  All we can really say is it is encouraging, especially compared to the static, same thing every week, same thing every half that we have lived (and died) by in the past.

Dude received more hate that Matt Kalil this offseason. He’s going to be good and is Only going to get better with time. I’m excited to see where we are in 2 years after we have a little time to develop our young players (basically our entire defense)

And I guess that is where I was speaking from in a way. I had read some of the criticism's early on, but now, speaking just on what I see thus far and actually seeing and listening to the guy, I see potential. I was mostly speaking on first impression, and OF COURSE the jury is still out, but the Panthers Identity I think historically has always been a hard nosed defensive, team that will scrap until then end. Based on the interview I saw, his personality seems to speak to just that, IMO of course.

It will be exciting to see our young guys respond to him. We will see if an old school mentality can win over. I think that playing defense is just that though... a GREAT defense IMO needs that old school toughness and hustle. Hopefully he'll have the flexibility to get through to these guys and win them over... Seems positive early on, all I'm saying.

I agree... And like Snow said, these guys haven't been together very long, they are just getting to know each other. This is a very unusual season, and with a brand new coaching staff I think what we have to hope for is just seeing improvement and cohesion from week to week. The Win's will come naturally, but we have to just be patient, especially this year.
