My opinion of Phil Snow

So I just watched my first interview of Phil Snow. First I watched the post game interview after the win Sunday against the Chargers, then I watched an interview before the Chargers game. I have to say... I am very impressed with this guy, I really think he will make our defense better and better as the season progresses. "We'll keep hitting that rock until it cracks", was what he said when a reporter asked about Brian Burns development in the interview pre Chargers game. Then we all saw what Burns did in that game. I really like this guy, when you look at him, when you hear him talk and analyze offenses based on questions you can tell this guy is the prototypical defensive coordinator. Let's not sleep on Phil Snow, there's something to this guy... just a "gut" feeling.

Sample size is way too small obviously but everyone said our defense was going to be historically bad before the season started. To hold the Chargers to 16 and finally get some real pressure on the quarterback and force takeaways, we finally felt like a real defense. I'm hoping that's Snow and the team taking a step forward although it very well could be an anomalous blip in a disastrous season defensively. Hoping for the former of course.

I like the guy and I think he brings a toughness in defensive coaching we've needed. He's got a young, heck a very young team out there to work with. There has been a learning curve and we've not hit its peak yet.

This Sunday's game will tell us a lot about how we're improving or if that game was a fluke this weekend. Murray is another young QB in a pass happy attack scheme, but he's got some experience and mobility around him. Still, last week saw some giants waking up and our team looks sounder than we'd thought on defense.

Convert a few more FGs into TDs and repeat the play on defense and you've got a winning team there.

So far I've been very pleasantly surprised. He's shown a willingness to adapt and try to put his players in position to succeed given their skill set instead of trying to force fit them into the system of his liking and it he seems quick to make those adjustments. I didn't expect much at all out of him, but he's definitely exceeded my expectations so far.

He's just an old school football coach.  He's seen a lot in his career and is use to working with young less talented players.  He has the ability to instill a hard nosed mindset in these young guys and I hope he can pull it off. My only concern was how he would be received by the vets.  Time will tell.

Phil Snow is the success behind Matt Rule. Go look at the college numbers for them together. Matt Rhule leads average offenses or below average offenses most years of college football but Phil Snow would turn below average defenses into some of the best in the country. I think Rhule had a top 30 offense once in his time in CFB. They had top 30 defenses like four or five of those years. But when they got to those programs they were some of the worst in the country.

He has been more who I had hoped he would be than who I feared he would be. As far as all of the in season stuff goes it's looking really positive. Adjustments, dedication to fundamentals and the need to improve each week showing up in games. I have to keep reminding myself that he isn't responsible for some of the personnel failures we are facing. If he can keep building a new core on his defense we will have a very good foundation to build around going forward.

I’m happy with the coaches, just want a new GM. As the coaches get further from college they won’t have the intimate knowledge they had this year. We need someone who won’t waste 6 day 2 picks and won’t waste money on someone like Short.

15 minutes ago, Panthers will Rhule said:

When I listened to Joe Judge’s Giants press conference, I said the same thing. This guy is one hell of a coach and wished Carolina would’ve hired him. Three games into the season and the Giants are 0-3 and one of the worse teams this season, if not the worst.

Can you pick three locks on Sunday?

asking for a friend with a betting problem.

    • Okay so I am reading something in The Athletic and it says that Jones had to pass through waivers. So I don't know. I looked this stuff up when we were number one there all offseason and I thought it said 4 years in the league got you vested, as they call it.  Vested gets you out of waivers as I understood it. I probably got something wrong, but when I think about the slack quality of journalism these days I wonder about that. So I went and looked, again. Well, well.  For everyone: "When a player has accrued at least four seasons in the NFL, they are considered a vested veteran. When these vested veterans get cut, they are released and their contract is terminated. When a vested veteran is released, they are an unrestricted free agent that can sign with any NFL team, and the team that released them doesn’t need to provide any additional compensation." It runs it all down here, where the quotes came from: https://www.profootballnetwork.com/waived-vs-released-nfl/ As far as Jones, the team turned down his 5th year option so I knew that meant he had 4 years in, because they re-signed him anyway, after turning down the much cheaper extra year.  The Athletic is owned by the New York Times so I shouldn't be surprised. That paper was an institution once upon a time but they let their standards go.
    • Well, we got our answer on Army today.
    • Not a chance the SEC could compete with the NFL.  In the large cities that are not in the Southeast, (LA, NYC, Chicago, SF) College football is an afterthought.
