weird.. I don't watch regularly but when I do - he is always saying something unique.. he doesn't speak in cliche' like all talking heads on ESPN and NFLN do usually..

And missed tackles on punt returns, missed field goals, injuries to Jonathan Stewart and Philly Brown, fumbles by normally sure handed running backs. etc....  It actually took a lot for us to lose that Superbowl.

The numerous headshots Cam took with no repercussions by the refs. The Cotchery catch alone would have changed the game. Denver was offsides on our two missed field goals. We had our problems but the NFL did everything it could to give Peyton Manning his retirement trophy.

I'm not talking playing. He was a awesome player but he was even a dick to Delhomme. Jake was just too nice to notice.

Jake and 89 were tight off the field though.  Think Jake just had the personality to deal w/ what 89 was.

I still remember 89 mic'd up week 1 coming off the AZ debacle.  Where Delhomme repeated the nightmare.   89 and Jake always seemed legitimately tight.

Smith:

“Cam is an excellent athlete. However, I didn’t learn from Cam and make mistakes with Cam. I grew up with Jake.... (My kids) and Jake’s kids grew up together. Invited each other to birthday parties.

“When Cam came along, I was (32 years old). When Jake and I played, we were two blind dogs in the meat house. And when you grow with people like that, it’s a different place in your heart than someone who’s just athletic and really gifted.”

Everyone has said this for years. This is why Smith was let go. He was seen as detrimental to Cam's development.

And he wasn't handing over the team crown and scepter to anyone who wasn't tougher than he was. Rather than let the two fight and battle lines be drawn on the team, they evaluated the two, saw the shorter (no pun intended) career ahead for Smitty and cut him loose.

It was the wise thing for the team to do. The wisest thing to have done for everyone was for Smitty to have handed over the crown and become Cam's guy, but Smitty got wise late -- just like most of us do.
