Matt Rhule wants to win

I started the year assuming we had enough talent to be 8-8. After the first game I moved my goals to a full tank and a 3-13 year. After last week I’m back to thinking we win between 6 and 8 games because the team will definitely improve.

overall I’m fine with trying to compete to be average this year or be a full tank. However my worst fear is we win a few games we shouldn’t and we don’t improve enough talent wise to move the needle.

im still undecided on whether this team has enough talent to compete without high round draft picks.

We don't necessarily need high round draft picks. We need good draft picks. As someone said earlier, certain franchises get high picks every year yet remain poor-mediocre teams.

Our front office has certainly excelled in blowing our high draft picks in recent years. Vernon Butler, Kelvin Benjamin, Devin Funchess, etc were all taken early in the draft and we have nothing to show for those choices. Greg Little was taken in the 2nd round 2 years ago and things are looking too promising so far.

Pittsburgh, Baltimore, NE, Seattle, etc don't pick in the top 10 every year but those teams are always competitive even in down seasons. Heck, NE even has a tendency to trade out of the first round. Granted, they had Tom Brady for the past 2 decades. But if I recall correctly, Brady himself wasnt  drafted until the 6th round.

High picks are great. But a good front office can find talent all over the draft, thru trades, or via free agency. Then, a strong coaching staff will put players in the position to succeed and game plan to maximize their strengths and minimize their weaknesses.

I think we have the pieces in place to have a strong coaching staff. I think we just need a better front office.

PS: Having Kuechly as a scout may result in us finding those hidden gems in the back end of the draft.

i think that guy means every person they talked to just agreed as fast as they could to his rant so they could get off the phone/not have their phone blowing up for 3 hours with his stupid knowitall bs.  i don't think he's comprehended what's going on yet, or how long he's going to have to keep this schtick up - literally years.

Nothing wrong for wanting your team to lose. Nothing wrong with wanting for them to win. I can see both sides.
Winning side wants to win because we’ll winning now is fun. Short term benefits but not necessarily long term success.
Lose now side want to lose during an obviously down year and get as high a pick as possible so the future is brighter. Short time losing hopefully  breeds long term success.
Nothing wrong with either side. IMO. People need to stop gatekeeping.

Imagine it. Because a lot of fans want this team to get a franchise QB pretty bad. Not win meaningless games.

I admit I,m 49 going on 12 myself, but you guys realize how ridiculous it is to debate an obvious juvenille? He's called you old, and cares what his mom thinks about football for fux sake.

This is really bad, you quoted me, then talked about me while quoting me. This is why I come here. For the little treats such as this guy, that forget how to type properly, then quoted me and talked about me, to me.

Seriously, you can't make this hilarious poo up. It's juvenile by the way. LOL.

Na, man. I just text people. I don't call people. I hate talking to people over the phone. It's awful.

I don't text people like that during the game this year. Because I expect the Panthers to suck, when they don't then it's a surprise.

From his presser...

These guys already see this young team improving and will now only work harder to squeak out a few more wins this season. This is why they are at the highest level of coaching they can possibly be at in their careers. You don't make it that far by being complacent in losing.

Exactly. Not trying to win is a recipe for a dysfunctional mess.

I know this can be situational to the draft year/talent coming out, but just consider where all the top QBs in the league came from:

Lamar, Mahomes, Brees, Wilson, Watson, Rodgers, Prescott, Allen...the highest pick was Josh Allen at 7 overall.

There aren't even many outliers, you've got Goff (1) Kyler (1) Cam (1)

Even look at other positions--Everyone was getting all crazy about Isaiah Simmons being this instant pro-ready stud, and he looked awful/completely out of his league week 1 and is now behind vets, getting minimal playing time.  You simply never truly know until you throw them out there. Even with Lawrence, Fields, etc.  Same thing happened with Solomon Thomas.  I remember how many craved him like a nice stick of buttah.

Who knows, maybe 4 years from now people will be saying how the hell Sam Ehlinger was drafted behind Trevor and Fields.

Maybe we end up pick 12-18 and still grab a QB of the future.  Just play to win the game.  Game by game.  Having the right staff in place is the most important thing and getting the overall team that can be a league-wide diabolical force.

Not to get too scouty and what if's but I wonder if being in the Big 12 is Ehlinger's biggest detriment. His numbers have improved every year.

I think it was Ryen Rusillo's podcast where he had a player on around Labor Day that had a really interesting point:

Current players instantly see the guys that are at that NFL level the second they step onto the practice field after the draft.  Some just instantly bring the energy, eagerness to study, lead, build something and be part of the team.

Others seem swallowed up by it all and shrink both mentally and on the field.  And said when they see it with first rounders/guys taken high in the draft, they have the hardest time to adjust because of expectations.  It becomes a bigger hurdle than the guys taken R2 and beyond.

And that type of thing, is something that people can't quite scout.  They can look like leaders in college, seem to have the intangibles, appear like the most pro-ready guys but if they don't really have that NFL level IT factor when they practice and get with their new teams, they falter and have a big hill to climb.  Many can't make it.

and edit: To add, you just never know who it is.  Can be surprising some years who ends up not making that leap.

Na, Ehlinger's deep ball is pretty trash. He's been a solid QB for years, but never the type to warrant any serious draft consideration. Not a huge fan of his, personally.
