Rank 24

Previous rank: No. 28

A nice win for the Panthers, who snapped a 10-game losing streak dating back to last season with a 21-16 victory over the Chargers at Hollywood Park. Matt Rhule probably took a little more satisfaction getting his first NFL win while team MVP Christian McCaffrey recuperates with an ankle injury. Mike Davis managed 91 yards from scrimmage and a score in CMC's place, and the Carolina defense made its overdue arrival with eight QB hits, two sacks and four turnovers. On offense, the Panthers have a legit 1-2 punch at wide receiver in D.J. Moore and Robby Anderson. They are the second receiver duo in team history to each have more than 200 receiving yards through three weeks.

24. Carolina Panthers (1-2, LW: 31)

Shaq Thompson was great in the Panthers’ upset win at the Chargers. He posted 13 tackles, forced a fumble and recovered it, and had Pro Football Focus’ top grade among all Panthers defenders. Thompson is filling in nicely for retired Luke Kuechly, which isn’t easy to do.

29. Carolina Panthers (1-2)

Week 3 ranking: 30

What we got wrong: The defense wouldn't be good enough to win early.

Don't get me wrong. The defense still has issues, none more than missed tackles and yards allowed after initial contact. But the Panthers are 1-2 after Sunday's 21-16 victory over the Chargers despite not having Pro Bowl DT Kawann Short in the middle for two games due to a foot injury and starting three to four rookies on defense at times. Still, they have been in position to win all three games, which is an accomplishment. As this group grows with experience alongside an offense that's capable of putting points on the board, the Panthers won't be an easy win moving forward. -- David Newton

22 PANTHERS That was a good road victory for this young team against the Chargers. The defense is loaded with young players and it's improving by the week.

ESPN has a bad habit of ranking the teams before the games are played and just adding in some text afterward. It’s how the 1-2 Panthers beat the 1-2 Chargers, but the Panthers are 29th and the Chargers are 19th.

I dont mind us being behind the chargers in the ratings given their injuries, but we should be right behind them if we are.  We clearly weren't at full strength either.

Indeed. Burn this mfer down and crucify Hurney if that happens. If we don’t get a QB in the first somehow, I will have lost all hope.

Even in the scenario where the board falls in a way that QB doesn't make sense (let's say Lawrence, Fields, and Lance are all gone) you gotta take a position of higher value than a non-pass rushing LB. We already have Shaq on a big contract. Investing too many of our resources into LBs and RBs has been an ongoing issue for the Panthers' organization.

    • This is factually incorrect. He was a two time Pro Bowler with the Rams and in fact statistically he was better with the Rams in his best season there than he has been with the Lions(could change with this season). Some of his per game stats have creeped into being marginally better with the Lions but there have not been dramatic differences in his play, actually. The biggest reason that McVay and he ended up splitting was McVay didn't think he could win a title with Goff. TBH.....so far he was 100% correct. Stafford almost immediately won them a SB and Goff in a historic run was about 70% of the reason the Lions faltered in the NFC championship game. He missed critical throws all over the first half and throughout the second half that he normally wouldn't. He choked. So, until Goff actually does win a SB...McVay has been right.
    • they have the best defense they've had in a long time...probably the best in the reid/mahommes era.  but i think they are probably the most beatable they've been in a while as well. record doesn't exactly bear that out, but they just don't look as strong on offense as they usually do. lots of reasons for that, like trying to build chemistry with newer receivers, but right now they just aren't as frightening as they typically are. i mean they'll probably win tomorrow, but i don't see them as the strongest team in the AFC right now.
    • He will likely remain unsigned the remainder of this season(barring someone being in a pure QB panic AND making poor decisions) largely due to the cost. I do think he will get multiple offers to be a backup QB and perhaps a couple to potentially start this offseason.  I will continue to beat the same horse over and over.....he should go to a successful team with an established starter. If I were him, go to somewhere like SF, LAR, etc. Somewhere with a successful QB coach and brilliant offensive mind and ALSO a set situation at QB. Ride the pine and adjust for a year or two. Chill and be around better culture. I would suggest the same for Bryce but he will be limited to wherever we can trade him.
