The old guard (Rivera, Gettleman) seem to have pissed off their fanbases

I know McDermott is good.

What about Steve Wilks?

McDermott was the defensive mastermind who was legendary defensive coordinator Jim Johnson's protege in Philly.

After he left the defense took a nosedive and Rivera and crew could not figure out how to slow down the Saints or Falcons offenses after that.

Gettleman was a terrible hire for the Giants.

If you want to give Gettleman credit for some of our playoff seasons, sure.  But the thing he did well here was making smart signings in free agency of relatively cheap players who could complement our impact players well.  Look at the 2013-2017 drafts.  Some good players, but I'd argue CMC and Short (for 3 or 4 seasons, anyway) are the only one's who you could call top-end roster guys.  Otherwise his success came from getting guys to fill holes in the short-term.  Nothing wrong with that, but it bites you in the butt in the long-term.  Gettleman didn't prove he was capable of building a team but rather patching one.  That's why Gettleman signed Kalil over drafting a LT.  Or why he signed different safeties every year over drafting one.  And despite the fact we needed another CB every year between '13-'15, he refused to draft one (other than 5th round Bene) every year until he was basically forced to because he cut Norman.

And now you as a Giants team hire him as a GM and who does he have there to build around?  Gettleman is doing nothing in New York differently than he did here, he just doesn't have the impact players to build around before.  I don't think he's got it in him to build a team from the ground up, personally.  Giants were bad when he took over... and have only gotten worse ever since.

Gettleman has been abysmal for a while. The 2015 season truly rode the core of a team he inherited and Rivera took a year off from being his own enemy.

Since going to NY he’s had the number 2nd,6th and 4th overall pick to work with. Had the freedom to hire his own coach from day 1. Fired him 2 seasons later and hired his 2nd head coach this year.

They have proceeded to go 9-26 under his leadership. He’s done this all while having a healthy starting QB that he chose. There’s literally no acceptable excuse for how terrible he’s been.

And the general public doesn’t understand why we wanted Ron gone. Anytime someone tells me that we “should have kept Rivera” I know immediately that they know jackshit about the Panthers.

My Football Team friend was so pumped for the Rivera hire. He will soon learn.

I really think Gettleman being forced to shop at the Flea Market instead of Tiffany's was a blessing in disguise for us.  To think...the one time he actually had a decent chunk of money to spend in FA, he used it on Matt Kalil.  Looks like he's continuing to sign mediocre players to big contracts over in New York when he has the cap space to do so...Nate Solder, Golden Tate, Sterling Shepard.  The more flexibility he has, the more bad decisions he makes.  The Leonard Williams trade was pretty terrible too - trading a third and a fifth for him in a contract season where they weren't even anywhere close to playoff contention, and now being forced to franchise tag him for more than $16 million for yet another season where they aren't even close to contending.
