Marty Hurney would have drafted Herbert

Not much of it is guaranteed and we can essentially cut him next year and still save money overall. Our needs weren't going to be filled this offseason, we had too many. Our needs will not be filled next offseason. Even if we crush free agency and the draft, we are still looking at probably 2022 to 2023 until we could plug all the holes effectively on our roster.

...plus you have to build depth at each position, which Hurney is notoriously bad at.  It could take a while if he's left unchecked.

Even if they cut him next year its still $40m for 2 years.  That's not stopgap money, that is someone you think you can win with.

If you don't' win with him it was a waste.  What helps a rookie QB more? $40m to spend on his offensive line, or Teddy's mentorship?

Yes if we don't make a playoff run this year or next year (don't hold your breath) it was a total waste. The front office seems to have no direction.

i haven't been reading articles.  there are multiple informed posters who have been talking about it in a few threads over the last week or so - so i'm assuming its correct.

I wouldn't assume that. I still haven't seen a trustworthy source confirm Rhule wanting to trade down. It's certainly believable/possible, but just a rumor right now.

In fairness, $20 mil is no longer a lot of money for a QB anymore. Is it too much for Teddy? Eh....I predicted somewhere in the $15-20 mil range so IMO it was roughly market value. I also don't know if there were any serious offers that high, considering it was Marty Hurney being involved.

If it was me personally, spend that money on the OL all day long. But, by that same token, we can't go out and spend freely on the interior of our OL in free agency. That is also how you end up with salary cap issues.

Was it a great signing? Probably not. I also don't view it as a terrible signing. If nothing else, we can trot Teddy out there next year even if we do have a new rookie QB so that he can take those shots instead of our new guy.

I will say that it’s way too early to crown Herbert. I only saw the end of that game and his horrific interception that probably cost them the game. Easy first down if he runs (at the time he could have just fallen forward, no one in sight) and he throws into triple coverage. They were in KC territory already and Mahomes found Hill for a TD to tie it moments later. He also completed 2/3 of his yardage to TE/RBs. I’m not going to say he played awful but that decision was one of his knocks and it cost them the game.

Team can get out of it after the second season. So I kinda expect us to sit the rookie for a season or we have a 19 million dollar backup.

Teddy is very smart and knowledgeable. Rookie will be able to pick his brain next year which will pay dividends in the development of rookie. Bridgewater can then be traded to a team in need. For example, a competitive team loses their QB short term or season ending, Teddy is better than most backup QBs.

Exactly. You have to factor in 2020 dollars. The next set of elite qbs is going to get/has been getting $40+ million per year. $20 million is now very low end starter money which is reasonable for a player like Bridgewater. And for the argument of stop gap vs trying to be competitive, why not both? That's exactly what it looks like. Short term contract that pays low end starter money you can easily get out of if you want to move in another direction or hand the reins to a rookie in a year or 2, but given to a guy with a decent track record who proved he could lead a team to wins in the right environment. That gives you the chance to be competitive and perhaps copy the rebuild model of a team like San Francisco but the flexibility to move on or transition to a new franchise qb if it doesn't work out.

Granted, Tyrod is your classic stopgap. But the difference is the Chargers have their qb of the future already. Will Grier is not that. It seems premature to establish a bona fide stop gap without having our actual future franchise qb yet. No guarantees we get one until the 2021 draft happens.
