Marty Hurney would have drafted Herbert

The fact that Hurney "would have" drafted Herbert is fine.  Seriously.  It's fine.

The fact that he also didn't sell out our future to move to get him is ALSO fine.  Hurney liked him a lot, would have drafted him if he fell . . . ok.

Saying that Hurney liked a guy that a lot of other teams also liked is barely even thread worthy.  I mean, really?  Is it?

We drafted Brown.  Even if Brown lives up to his potential, he's never likely to produce a bunch of stats.  Let's say Brown fulfills his promise completely as a NT.  He's going to be doubled on every play.  He won't get tackles, he won't get sacks he'll just make everyone around him much, much better.

Honestly kinda wished we had of drafted Herbert. Then I could have probably enjoyed this  season more since we pretty much would know that Teddy isn’t going to be the long term QB.
Now we are kinda stuck in a “will Teddy actually be our franchise QB or will we be drafting a QB?”

I have enjoyed the games but I will admit that this season so far has been “stressful” because a lot of the questions about this team that will affect the future won’t be answered till the offseason.

I wanted no part of Herbert based on his play at Oregon. But, the guy has all the physical tools you could ever want in a QB and at the end of the day, I don't know if a lot of the stuff I disliked about his Oregon play was due to him or simply limitations of their offense. Either way, he was off the board when we picked anyway so at the end of the day it doesn't really matter. He wasn't option for us.

You don't pass up someone you believe can be a franchise QB in the draft unless you already have one on your team. I would rather suck for a year or two and try again than to be the team with a good enough QB and get my heart torn out losing in the wild card and divisional round of the playoffs every couple years or the one year where the stars align and we make the conference finals only to get BTFO by a team with a top 5 QB

There's so much to rebuild here that QB might not even be addressed next year and we'd still be on schedule. That offensive line needs a lot of help, and it's beginning to look like we don't have decent DEs for a 4-3 alignment. I like Burns, but he's looking more and more like he needed to be a 3-4 OLB/Edge player.

Right now, if we don't get a decent O-line built it will be pointless to grab a top spot QB.

but your point is taken

Not much of it is guaranteed and we can essentially cut him next year and still save money overall. Our needs weren't going to be filled this offseason, we had too many. Our needs will not be filled next offseason. Even if we crush free agency and the draft, we are still looking at probably 2022 to 2023 until we could plug all the holes effectively on our roster.

Panther fans witnessed an anomaly in 2002 when the DTs were Brentson Buckner and Kris Jenkins and between them racked up 12 sacks, while Peppers and Rucker got another 12 and 10, respectively. We'll never see that kind of productivity in the NFL again. If we do, it'll be lightning striking twice.

Regardless, Brown is supposed to fill the middle and let the DEs do their thing. The issue is not Brown, this issue is the lack of starting-caliber pass rushers. Sorry, there are none on this roster.

With respect to Herbert, despite some scouting reports suggesting his commitment to the game was questionable, and I think it was evident at times during his tenure at Oregon, I still preferred him in the draft. Although it was a shortened version of Hard Knocks this year, I liked everything I saw and I liked what I saw last week against KC. He's a rook, he's gonna make mistakes.

Agreed...I know this QB class is very highly regarded so I definitely wouldn't advocate passing up any of the top 3...but at the same time, I'd prefer we build up as much of our supporting roster as possible before we draft our presumed franchise QB.  I want us to maximize his talent while he's on his rookie contract, rather than drafting him and watching him get beat up behind a poor o-line or losing 35-31 shootouts behind a poor defense.  Then getting maybe one or two good playoff seasons in contention before having to pay his hefty second contract.
