3-3-5 and are we wasting burns?

Personally for me im a schematics guy. I love to pressure the qb so I was in favor of the 3-4. The 3-3-5 is great at stoping the pass but at the expense of getting gashed in the run as we are.  And its only good against the pass if you have the horses to make it work. We picking up "horses" from the waiver wire on top of not really having a number 1 cb. That spells disaster for this defense already.

We are the only nfl team without a single sack..  not 1. How is that possible??? For me I love burns.. is he perfect no.. he isn't a positive in the run game and brings 0 to the power rush department. But as a speed rusher there are maybe only 5 or so guys that are better in that department if you as me. So why is he either not on the field or out in the flats on coverage assignments so often?

I wanted to take a few to post some thoughts on Brown as well. I was never in the corner of taking a nose tackle so high when you have a gaping hole in the pass rush. He is pretty good at what he does so far... but is it top 7 good? Meh... seemed like a luxury pick to me like you can go nose if you have all the other important pieces in place like qb,LT, edge, cb, and then you can choose between say specific only positions like nose, middle,lb and so on.

Just my early season thoughts and ramblings... im sure many wont agree and I could be wrong but this is how I see thing right now. With the loss of cmc for a few weeks I think we should fully embrace the tank mode and accept it for what it is.

We were very good at rushing the passer at the expense of not being able to stop the run at all last year. IMO, so far this iteration is preferable to that. Then again, we haven't faced an elite QB yet who doesn't need the assistance of a walker on the field, so we'll see if that holds up.

2019

Team Defense: 31st

Passing Defense: 13th

Rushing Defense: 29th

Scoring Defense: 31st

2020

Team Defense: 27th

Passing Defense: 12th

Rushing Defense: 19th

Scoring Defense: 27th

It's better. Definitely not much, but it is better.

It's not like we're stopping the run very well this year... Jacobs and Fournette (yuck) absolutely gashed us.

I would guess in a 3-3-5 Burns is basically a Dlineman that stands up labeled as a LBer, moves around to favorable matchups and shouldn't be covering poo unless the DC is trying to get unnecessarily cute. The question there is who are the 3 upfront? I wouldn't mind building it but to expect bodies to fill spots based on pure theory makes me look to last year and doubt we could pull it off without a full 2 seasons to build it right.

Honestly they should probably trade Burns now when someone might be willing to give up a nice DP. Typical tweener guy who is a 3-4 edge rusher. Doesn’t fit our scheme. I didn’t love the pick to begin with and FSU ends don’t have a very good track record in NFL. Marty didn’t learn his lesson with Everette Brown.

3-3-5  will not work in the NFL teams will just run all over you. Could not believe when i seen that on 1st downs and guess what they ran right at it.

Agree, it’s a college defense. Might work against Rutgers, Indiana, and TCU but it is not a defense for the NFL. I can’t believe we are even having this conversation.

Our run defense looks better and that’s with Whitehead instead of Luke. Our defensive line is much better at stopping the run that it was last year. It’s how we were able to get back into the game against the Raiders and the Bucs. We need a MLB and safety and we might have a good young defense next year. They should really try Shaq and MLB and Chinn/Carter on the outside. Shaq can’t be worse than Whitehead and it will let a better player like Carter get on the field in his place...

I kind of like Burris & Chinn at safeties, Douglas & Pride on the outside, Jackson at NB, with Shaq at MLB and Carter at OLB.
