Was Hurney kept on for this season solely to be the scapegoat?

"Marty Hurney is an incredible... well, let's not give him that kind of compliment. He's a... very good... evaluator of college talent."

Tepper is a guy who sometimes puts his mouth in gear before his brain is fully engaged. I'd say this was one of those times.

The later interview with Bill Voth where he made the "best evaluator of college talent in the league" comment was likely damage control for that moment, but even then he was talking about how the GM job was "too big for one man".

I'm still not sure how clearly Tepper understands just how bad Marty actually is at his job, but I hope he's at least starting to pick up on it.

That is the part that is very hard to figure out.  How in the wild world of sports did Tepper not do a deep dive into all things football?

Even if you make every excuse for the guy (like many have done here for over a decade) his record is simply dreadful, and he's captained two different (in theory) teams to purgatory or worse...hell, where we are now.

It's legit mindblowing.

Hurney 2.0....am I right?

I think our best hope to be Marty free is Tepper quietly encouraging Hurney to "retire" this offseason and promoting Pat Stewart to the GM role.

Stewart isn't currently the highest ranking guy in the front office but he's got a connection to Matt Rhule that could trump everything else.

Not necessarily my ideal scenario but possibly better than what we have now.

Having no GM at all would be better than what we have now.

Tepper has suggested splitting up the GM duties. That's been done here before... by Jerry Richardson :eyeroll:

I'm kind of hoping he only said that because he realized Marty Hurney couldn't handle the job solo. I wouldn't want to see us go back to that model.

Right now I have no clue what is going on behind the scenes in BOA.  I get more confused by the day.

For the record, Rhule and Jeff Ireland are actually friends too. Ireland got to know Rhule when he was coaching at Baylor (Ireland is a Baylor alumnus). So there's that.

From the Saints perspective though, I think they'd likely try very hard to hang on to Ireland. Some folks believe Ireland is the heir apparent to Mickey Loomis.

You might have an easier time going after Terry Fontenot, but Fontenot doesn't have a connection to Matt Rhule that I know of.

I also want to remind everyone that if Shaq Thompson or Tre Boston were on other teams this season, they'd be performing well and we would have been cursing Hurney for not re-signing them because the Panthers are the worst team in the NFL this season and every player on the defense looks like a f*cking loser because this team is f*cking terrible.
