Was Hurney kept on for this season solely to be the scapegoat?

Didn't Tepper interview or try to interview several candidates this year? Also some speculation that he's obsessed with trying to bring Colbert over here from PIT and he was extended 1 year so could be an option after the season. I think timing may have played a factor.

The premise of the OP assumes Rhule is the one with final say of the roster this year, which is not known but seems possible.

Legitimate candidates could not be interviewed because Hurney was the GM and interviewing was only in the name of assistant GM or whatever they called it. Therefore teams like the Eagles did not allow interviews for >lateral positions. Thus, anyone qualified enough simply was not and could not be interviewed. Anyone who was, was not legitimate or qualified and simply was to appease rules put in place.

Personally, I consider this Teppers biggest fug up to date. It really showed his inexperience.

No, it's looked atrocious from the get go due to the signing of Bridgewater. We literally chose Teddy Bridgewater over Cam Newton. Had we cut Cam and stuck with the young virtually no cap hit QBs that would've kinda made sense, but paying a journeyman QB real money when you had Cam already under contract? LOL!

Ok, again, it’s sounds better if you say it.

You know I have never said one word about the Panthers letting Cam go. I lobbied for it. It made sense to tear it down. But signing TB for 20M/yr was a backhand slap. And my opinion of Teddy is exactly the same as it’s been for years. For lack of a better word.....Purgatory. So I no longer saw what the plan was. Unfortunately, that’s y’all’s problem going forward.

I truly think that’s by design. Tepper bought into Ruhle completely. Which is fine. So unless it’s a hand-picked guy by Ruhle, I don’t see a GM coming to Carolina anytime in the near future. If you’re gonna pay a coach 9M, might as well let him buy the groceries. Hurney is probably giving advice, but I have a hard time believing Rhule doesn’t have final cut.

That is also a big concern, as well. Possibly they only had a Plan A and Plan B, with not real idea of what happened after that. I would hope that wouldn't be the case. I just can't see why you would "settle" for fuging Marty Hurney.

Or if plan a or b doesnt work out stick with Hurney is plan c.  Makes sense that way you aren't settling on someone you dont want in a long term deal.  Keep Hurney until you find the guy you really want and move Hurney wherever you want to.

I could buy keeping Hurney as a figure head/place keeper/fall guy until the person you really want as GM comes along.

What I can't understand is why an owner would allow a fall guy to continue to throw away comp picks and eat up cap space with bad contracts that will haunt this team for years to come.

Conclusion:  Hurney isn't a fall guy and until he's gone this team is in trouble.

Teppers first mistake when buying this team was to "focus on the business side" first....well, to be honest, your business is American Football.  Not soccer, not a practice facility, not cool restaurants, new domes, etc...Football.  He should have known what he didn't know, and should have done enough thorough research on the Panthers to know that Marty Hurney was not the guy for the job, or any job to be honest.

His second was not firing both Ron and Marty right away and starting from scratch.  The stench of Jerry was all over those two, the front office, the roster, etc...it permeated all things Panthers.

His third, and where I finally gave up on him, was keeping Marty after breaking up the (non)Dynamic Duo.  When Marty was forced to finally be mean to someone, he too should have been shown the door.

His fourth, was not hiring a GM before starting a new head coaching hunt.  Nope just kept that stench right there along side him.

Tepper has shown just how little he knew about the Steelers day to day operations, especially the football side.

At this point, all we can hope for is that he starts to learn, I have seen very little evidence of this however.

Could be completely possible. Conflicting information though. The draft has Rhule written all over it it. The Shaq contract has Hurney written all over it. Seems odd Rhule would vouch for a contract like that without even working with Shaq. But it could be possible.

But why even keep Hurney around then? Rhule may be picking the players but someone else needs to be structuring contracts. I have a feeling that’s Hurney and by god it shouldn’t be.

Shaq was before season ended. Ruhle wasn’t hired yet. But the point of why sign him before the HC is hired is valid.

As to why he’s here? Honestly, the scapegoat scenario makes the most sense.

How do we know that Rhule wasn't heavily involved in those decisions? Yes, they reek of Hurney all day but Rhule had to have at least some input in these dumb decisions -- not a great sign if that is the case considering the commitment we've made to him...

Yeah, I was really hoping for a much better football approach from someone coming out of the Steelers' ownership group. We'll see how the Tepper era ultimately goes, but it's not off the a great start.
