Was Hurney kept on for this season solely to be the scapegoat?

But cutting him has only looked real bad for about 8 days. Plus there is plenty more to throw on his back on his way out the door. Kk, Paradis, Boston, Shaq???, no OL signed, Teddy???. Hurney could eat all that too.

No, it's looked atrocious from the get go due to the signing of Bridgewater. We literally chose Teddy Bridgewater over Cam Newton. Had we cut Cam and stuck with the young virtually no cap hit QBs that would've kinda made sense, but paying a journeyman QB real money when you had Cam already under contract? LOL!

I don't recall if he actually ever "formally" interviewed any of the candidates. I know it was rumored we talked to a few front office guys(including the guy from NE). Maybe he is waiting for the "right" guy. I fuging hope so because the alternative is a nightmare for the future of this franchise. I say that not even in regards to Hurney but in regards to having an owner that makes those kind of decisions.

I wouldn't assume Rhule has final say. After all, Shaq was extended without a coach at all.

They requested to interview Andrew Berry before he got the Browns job but were denied because the position in question didn't involve final say over the roster.

As far as I know, the only personnel type they actually interviewed was Pat Stewart (Samir Suleiman is more of a cap guy than a scouting type).

Doesn't sound like a very exhaustive search. Who knows what went on behind the scenes, though? They may have talked to quite a few people informally.

Thanks Scot, you follow that aspect more closely than me and probably everyone else on this forum. I still think Tepper will make a hard push to get Colbert in here next year or even after that if he keeps doing the 1 year deals with Pittsburgh.

I think getting denied on Berry was an "oh sh-t" moment where they realized the same thing was gonna happen with anyone else they wanted.

Doesn't exactly inspire confidence that they know what they're doing, I know.

I think getting Colbert might have been a dream scenario for Tepper.

There were indications that Colbert was at least interested but who knows how that went?

Yeah we'll probably never know the specifics of those discussions, but I think there's certainly a reasonable chance that Colbert had interest in coming here but Pittsburgh made him a good enough offer to get him to stay at least for another season. I think it's very telling that he was only extended for 1 year. Either he's still open to leaving, or he's considering retirement soon which is certainly possible.

That is also a big concern, as well. Possibly they only had a Plan A and Plan B, with not real idea of what happened after that. I would hope that wouldn't be the case. I just can't see why you would "settle" for fuging Marty Hurney.

If Colbert were to come here, I'm pretty sure his unofficial title would be something along the lines of "god emperor of all things football" and his salary would be commensurate with that title.

All I know is that when Hurney is officially gone I will have to drive down to SC and join in on the party that would only envy a superbowl win. It will be my and many there's personal superbowl to have purged the franchise of Marty Meatballs for good.

Would be nice if our owner was capable of that much forethought, even if it is a stupid decision. So far all indications are he has no idea what he is doing or what a winning team is in the NFL. This would be giving Tepper more credit than he has earned yet.

What I do know is it's his 3rd year and it's not looking good. He needs to hire a competent consultant, fire Hurney and start learning enough to support good football people here to run his program for him.

What he can do is get in front of a microphone and make a fool of himself now that all the easy kiss-up-to-the-fanbase stuff is over.

He is #1 to blame for the state of the Panthers and at some point he will get better or just cement himself as a known joke in the football world.

It's looking like we're going to have a truly terrible record this year, probably 3 or less wins. You can't have that kind of a season and justify keeping everyone in place at the end of the season, fans and media would tear the owner/team apart for that. Tepper has already committed to a 3-5 year rebuild, as he's directly alluded to in interviews, so I think it's pretty clear he's going to give Rhule and the coaching staff and all the FO people he's brought in this year a long leash and job security this year and probably the next year or two at least.

So, did Tepper wait to fire Hurney to do it after this first terrible year of the tank so that it can look like we made a move to improve the team further after the season? Despite his comments about Hurney as a "great talent evaluator" I don't really get the sense that Tepper sees Hurney being here much longer, and firing/replacing the GM (especially a disliked one like Hurney) after a bad season is a big move that can appease fans/media following a dumpster fire season.

And if this is the reason Hurney is still here, is it a valid reason for you and would you gain the respect back for Tepper that was lost when we saw that Hurney was kept around?

I certainly hope so.
