we should trade burns while he still has value

Tough seeing the logic. One of our few defensive players with legit talent and ship him off for a mid round pick? So we can get another Rashaan Gaulden or Will Grier? How about tweaking your scheme to maximize his potential? If you're not going to do it for your highest ceiling players, who are you scheming around?

My fear is we don’t use him properly and he doesn’t produce in a 4-3, so we end up moving on to a 4-3 DE and we let him go or we trade him and get nothing for him because he isn’t producing in a 4-3 Defense. I hope I am wrong and he starts getting sacks but I think it’s possible he won’t do well as a 4-3 DE and can only excel as a 3-4 olb.

its not his fault, he was drafted because we decided to become a 3-4 for 5 minutes, but its clear that he's solely a 3-4 guy. he just doesn't fit in a 4-3

No he certainly does not.... He really needs to gain about 15-20 pounds of muscle. I'm surprised he didn't seem to gain much weight this past off season. He was a bit disruptive this game and it made a difference, but his only move is that same speed rush, otherwise he gets manhandled. That being said, I think he can still be a factor, he just needs a little more time.

    • I think the experts overthink it at times.  I am also not sure they measure things that matter, and if you measure things that don't really matter, it can cause your board to fluctuate--you are creating bias using facts that are assumed to equate to performance.  Football is an emotional game, and if I were a GM, I would measure emotional intelligence.  I would measure (if this can be measured) the speed of conversion from a concept (technical/mechanics) to muscle memory.  I would watch film and time how long it takes a qb to get to their second and third reads--how long does it take an ILB to make the first step and how often do they false step.  How often does a WR bobble a pass vs. clean catches? Examples, but there has to be something we are not measuring that would improve our success rates in drafts.
