How different are we than last year?

I think I can explain it.  Hurney has 8x10 glossies of Tepper.

It is possible things will change this year.  At least that is my hope.  I don't mind it if Hurney has a role, but not as the guy pulling the trigger on draft picks.  That said, there were some indications that Rhule or someone kept him on a leash during this draft.

Maybe. I think I would rather just cut ties with him entirely and be on the safe side.

That would have been my preference, too.  I understood why he was still here for the draft.  But the sand ran out of that hourglass.

I guess we will see this coming offseason. If we don't cut ties with him this offseason, I guess I just don't see what the master plan is.

There's no question that we're vastly different as a team. We will need to gell to get an idea of what we can or will be. There are a good bit of positives though. We're younger, so we can play faster. Granted we'll make more mistakes, but:

On defense, if all 11 are playing the ball, we can make good things happen.

On offense, I believe that Teddy B week get the ball out quicker, accurate and take advantage of his dump off routes.

I'm so ready Panthers...

I don't have any expectations for this season.  Maybe they have been wrung out of me from previous years.  But, I see this just as an early step in trying to develop a long-term winner.  I'm happy for that, whether it works or not, because I am tired of putting band aids on shotgun wounds.

I've said this before, but if the season ends and the team looks like it is gelling and moving together as a unit, we see maturing of our draft choices, and I get the feeling the coaching staff is capable of making game plans and adjustments that can steal a win or two next year, I'll be happy.  We are early in a process.

I agree with that. We're building a team for tomorrow but I'd like to see a few positives today as well...

Ah yes......the American sickness. The need to divide people into warring camps.

How decidedly anti-optimistic that is.

Says the coiner of the term "sunshine crowd" lol.  But hey, congratulations cause it looks like recruitment is going well...I like that dude's "sunshine pumping" extension, that must be our special finishing move.  I can already picture the fliers for the fear-mongering campaign:

"Beware the diabolical menace known as The Sunshine Crowd! Lock your doors, hide ya kids, hide ya wives....cause they just might be around the corner waiting to pump some sunshine through those dark clouds!!"

It was a complete tear down. Yes we will suck this year but hopefully after we get out of cap hell and draft a few high picks we will be back.

I am curious to see how this cap retraction works out. Technically, we are set up to weather that storm fairly easily.

It will be interesting to see if the league bails out the "favored franchises" that might end up in serious trouble if the cap retracts significantly. We could turn this around very quickly with a franchise QB pick and cap breathing room.

It was a partial teardown, the type that keeps you around 7-9 on good years, and 4-12 on "unlucky" years.

We started tearing it down, and got scared, so we started to build it up, but we lack talent, so now we are just hoping for the best....which is rarely good.

I've been almost 100% against the moves of this franchise for the last 3 years, and while I want the team to do well, I have lost so much faith in this organization.  The ineptitude at the top is just scary.

The Gettleman years were the start of the roster decline due to poor drafting which Hurney has largely accelerated. Outside of 2017, Gettleman only had four players to make it past their rookie contracts here. That's pretty terrible. Gettleman was the king of whiffing on first round draft picks, a place which Hurney excels but Hurney is awful after the first round, a place where Gettleman found much more success.

So, between those two pretty awful GM's, they have basically created what we are seeing now. The least talented roster in the history of the franchise.

Yeah, DG wasn’t the best but even in 2017 we did have a talented team. Guys like Star, Bradberry, Butker, Norwell, Butler and others are all still playing so it’s not really DG’s fault that Hurney made the call on those guys.

I assume Turner, CMC, Boston and Shaq are the guys you are referring to but that doesn’t include Moton or Samuel who could be extended, or depth guys like Klein, Mayo, Williams, Funchess, Elder, Worley and Armah who are still playing.

I mean DG had 5 drafts but only 4 offseasons so how many guys could he have extended. Not trying to call DG a solid GM (don’t want to open that can of worms) but let’s be honest, the roster in 2017 was way more talented than the teams we had the past two seasons. I see some real potential with the rookies but they are still rookies and there are still gaping holes like LBs, CBs, TE and most importantly OL.

It made sense to let go of Star, Norwell and Butler. All those guys weren't worth the money/draft pick.

I don't care about guys who are still playing(and largely poorly) for other teams. The point is that even Gettleman didn't see that they were worth keeping around past an initial contract. That speaks volumes about how poorly he performed at drafting. The record is extremely clear on how bad he was. He had some talented rosters but they couldn't ever muster back to back winning seasons.

Gettleman SUCKS. Hurney SUCKS.  There is no benefit to rehashing the same "sinking versus floating turd" argument again. Now that Gettleman has successfully deconstructed a successful franchise in New York and Hurney has deconstructed a not so successful franchise in Carolina, the full story has been told. They both fuging stink.

How did Gettleman not see anything? That’s what I’m saying. If a GM is fired before players can be resigned you can’t say he didn’t see their worth. While I agree somewhat. Maybe Star would have been better than Poe. Instead of wasting money of Reid and Smith and Searcy we could have kept Norwell who excelled for us. Might have dumped Gano for Butker as well and kept Norwell.

It’s not about lauding DG but it’s a terrible argument saying he didn’t extend players when he was gone. We wasted a poo ton of cap the past two years because the drafts gave us 2 players. If players he selected are traded or not resigned but are playing elsewhere due to a new GM. Gettleman isn’t a great GM but the wheels fell off the bus as soon as Marty was able to put his stamp on the team. Thank god for Rhule and co. If Rivera was still here god knows we would have had another Hurney special draft and this team would be even more devoid of talent. We weren’t devoid of talent in 2017.
