So with COVID going on, they moved a ton of sports from ESPN to ESPN+ to get extra fees from customers who already pay for regular TV.  Now, they announced that they are creating an extra tier to Disney+ for additional fee with Premier Access... so now all new releases will go to Disney+ Premier Access and you cannot get Premier Access without buying Disney+.  Ain’t that some poo they wheeling and dealing...?

At least for the time being the Premier access seems to just be for the Mulan movie. I'd view it more like a substitute for a movie ticket right now. We'll see if they start adding already released content behind a premium access fee as well but right now it's just Mulan.

They announced like 2 weeks ago Mulan will be on Disney+ for everyone to see and on Sept 4 they threw a curveball to clearly get extra cash from their customers.  Like bro, we get it, it’s covid and you did not get revenue you wanted but that’s a dick move.  Once covid started, Frozen II and Onward got moved to Disney+ the second theater shut down.  Mulan was released to TV on demand for 29.99 but barely anyone ordered.

If you don't want to pay the $30, it's coming to regular Disney+ on December 4 at no extra charge. The premier access is exactly what it sounds like: "Premier." You can see if first if you don't want to wait.

Contrary opinion: I applaud the effort.

We're in uncharted waters, and this is a trial balloon, not only for Disney, but the movie companies in general: How much money can they make releasing one of their marquee films completely online.

Studios have been on the fence about releasing new movies online, even the same day as the theater for fear of losing out on the money. And they could dip their toes in the water with a B-level or C-level movie that they were expecting to make like, 40 to 100 million, and see how it goes. But we were never going to see a shift to virtual releases until they see that a new, blockbuster movie can rake in blockbuster type dollars, entirely online.

I hope they do make enough money to make it worthwhile. And I hope we see a lot more of these movies that were supposed to be spring/summer releases rolling out digitally. And if that model works, hopefully when the theaters re-open, you'll start to see more "digital the same day as theaters" new releases. Some people will still want the big screen experience, but if I don't want the hassle, of getting to the theater, the expensive ass concessions, virus super-spreaders, noisy candy crunchers, screen-shouters, rowdy teens, MST3K wannabees, and light-of-a-thousand-suns texting during the movie denizens, I can just watch it at home. Also, there's new release movies I probably wouldn't bother going go see in theaters, but would gladly pay $20 to watch at home.

That said, the price point of $30 is hiiiiiigh. I'm sure that's because this is a Disney movie, and they're counting on a family of 4+ watching, and have to make all that money on households rather than tickets. Plus they have to factor in watch parties, where you invite 10 friends over to watch a movie on your home theater setup. Then $30 is chump change. But for the wifey and me, or just me, it's steep. They'll have to find a way to make it more worthwhile for individual viewers.

Anyway, I'm actually excited to see how this pans out. Outside of IMAX experiences, I'm kinda over theaters.

My advice...ride it out without ESPN+ right now...the big matches will be on the big networks soon.  Them bundling these services is a money grab from one of greediest companies ever.

So here is another one...Peacock is 5$ and probably mandatory for me as many EPL matches will be on this service from NBC.  Not on Roku or Fire yet but I can cast from ipad or use your smart tv.  A little annoying but cheap.

Peacock owned by NBC.  I bet you they moved to Peacock so now people have to get both Peacock and NBC Sport apps to watch games.  Ripoff.

You like football? $60 addition a year.  Soccer? Addition $60.  UFC? Additional $60 a year. And so on on top of regular cable TV with sport package on it...

Oh yea... when it comes to soccer... you want English soccer? $60.  You want French? $60.  You want to watch English FA cup? $60.  Champions League? $60.  And so on.

We paid for the Disney+ subscription for the Mandalorian and all of the Marvel shows they were touting. Loved the Mandalorian and then we waited, paid, waited, paid, waited, paid... Got ready to cancel the subscription and oh, here comes the next season of the Mandalorian. And more teases of Marvel shows.

Kinda feeling strung along here. Anyone else?

Yeah, I signed up for the Mandalorian and marvel shows.  Still waiting, but on the flip side, being able to watch the classics with my kids without shuffling DVDs is nice.  I have the Hulu/Disney+ bundle plus ad free hulu + live TV.

Funny thing is, despite my plethora of streaming services (CBS All Access, Hulu Full Monty, Netflix, and HBO Max), I'm still paying less for all that than I would have on cable.  I have zero intention of picking up NBC.  We are good here.

And they're talking about eliminating their stock dividend.  F those guys.  Glad I never bought stock in them.
