uh, how great would it have been to let gaulden go in his first camp.  i think this is a positive move.  if a guy doesn't fit he doesn't fit.  maybe he can fit somewhere else.

Yeah but it would be nice to draft guys that you shouldn't be cutting before they play a game. Not great talent evaluation there.

81% of 5th rounders make the roster their rookie year. 70% of 6th rounders and 58% of 7th rounders do too. Every pick matters.

“Making the roster” lol, what a useless metric. I guess all those terrible players Hurney drafted and held onto for longer than he should have, actually were pretty good cause they continuously made our roster year after year.

Players remember this crap when deciding where to go in FA, were starting to develop a bad reputation.

if you are a FA and a bubble roster caliber player, and avoid us because you are prone to being hutthurt, then we dont want ya.

this type of thing happens on every team. its not our fault he publicly went out and announced he had job security when he really didnt.

Smarty Marty waived 2020 fifth rounder Robinson.... well at least he wasnt a 7th like Smith or Goodwin(wavied same yr..) 3rd rounder Gaulden waived last year. Marty needs to wave the GM. Not upset about losing 7th rounders, but 3rd and 5th rounders should stick longer than one training camp/one year.

A change in coaching staffs leads to these types of things, especially for project players. It's not that out of the ordinary, even for day two picks. Sometimes even day one picks get the boot with the arrival of a new regime.

This is a little bit of a red herring. What really matters is how many actually last in the league, much less make a real impact.

An interesting analysis if you care to read it, though a little dated and not specifically about the importance of later round picks.

https://bleacherreport.com/articles/1600451-are-late-round-draft-picks-the-key-to-success-in-the-nfl

"Only 28.2 percent of players drafted in Rounds 4, 5, 6 and 7 were retained at the end of their first contract—which is a number that is largely supported by an abundance of fourth-round picks re-upping. Rounds 5, 6 and 7 made up 16.7 percent of the 28.2 percent total."

I've read other articles related to later round picks that basically point to the same thing.

Sometimes it's better just to give up the ghost and move forward. And, on an off note, there's a lot of value among the ranks of UDFAs, so that shouldn't be underestimated, especially when juxtaposed against day 3 draft picks.
