Tepper talks Matt Rhule and Marty Hurney

With that said, so did Chip Kelly. And Rhule wasn't facing the highest level of competition where he coached.

It's far from guaranteed that he'll be successful at the NFL level. We all hope that he will, but right now he's still a huge unknown and giving him anything close to full control is very premature.

The thing about Rhule that separates him from Chip Kelly (and I have not thought this through) is that Rhule is a leader of men--Kelly had a system that got figured out.  Rhule was not facing the highest level of competition--but you do not judge the leader by the opposition.  If 300 Spartans can hold back thousands of Persians for days on end,  that is no indication of weak leadership, but it does say something about a man who can get 300 people to fight to their deaths without reservation or fear.  I think Rhule has that kind of ability--a leader of men, not a gimmicky chess player.

Hurney is good at drafting and the stats back it up.  He will be moved to pure drafting position which is the right spot.

Hes absolutely awful at putting together a winning roster though, and the stats back that up.

The winning was up to Ron and his five best friends.  The talent was there, we got outcoached.

Hurney hired the coach so he is 100% responsible.

Marty has held the GM position in Carolina from 2002-2012 and 2017-present). That's a total of 14 years not including he upcoming season.

During that time Marty never constructed teams that had back to back winning seasons with John Fox or Ron Rivera (2002-2012, 2017-present). That's a total of 14 years. This is a mind boggling fact when you consider that both coaches took teams to the Super Bowl and had other years where they fielded playoff squads.  

I can't blame him for some of the bad coaching and game day decisions we've seen through the years. But, he is responsible or the bad draft classes, poor draft day trades, the poor cap management, and unwise contract extensions during his years as GM. If Marty was let go today, I think we can all agree that there isn't another team in the NFL that interview him, much less hire him, for another GM position. 

That said, that doesn't mean that he isn't capable of holding a position for an NFL club. I just think his record show he's not well suited to be GM or a head personnel guy in terms of constructing a solid roster from top to bottom.

In fairness to criticism Number 1, none of our other GM's have ever been able to have back to back winning seasons either.

What you pointed out in your post is even more troubling. Last year was our 25th season as a NFL Franchise. Still, no back to back winning seasons. From 1966-1985 the Dallas Cowboys NEVER had a losing season...or even a .500 season. Belichick is on the verge of doing the same thing in New England.

A kid born during our inaugural season (1995) has had time to finish 12 years of primary education, complete a Bachelors Degree, and almost finish medical school without ever seeing the Panther string together consecutive winning seasons. If the above pupil opted to pursue a career as an attorney, he (or she) would already have their degree.

Oh well, at least we have yet to reach a level of consistent mediocrity as our fellow division rivals in Atlanta. It took the Falcons 44 seasons to post back to back winning records: 2008 (11-5) and 2009: (9-7)

Ron and his five best friends coached so much better when the Panthers had a different GM. Interesting.
