Will Grier admits he sucked last year

It's hard to compare guys that played in the 70's and 80's to QB's that play today.  So many rule changes to help the passing game and almost all offenses feature some part of the west coast offense that make completions much easier now than it was then.

I agree---Bradshaw is in the hall and had only 2 more TDs than Interceptions, but in the 70s and 80s, I am willing to wager that below 50%--below 40% completion rates would have resulted in benching players today.  But they were much more vertical then---

He was put in a terrible situation last year, the coaching staff knew he wasn't ready but put him out there anyway.

That is the point I was making---Bradshaw and Elway were thrown into the fire and both had terrible rookie seasons.  Grier got few reps all season and it showed---he may never be more than a backup, but we should not judge him based on 2 games last year---the team had mailed it in.  I hope he develops.

Regardless of how hard he practices in the backyard with his dad, did anyone really see anything promising in this guy last year? If so, what was it?

A lot of guys play football in the backyard with their dad. We don't all get a solid NFL career out of it.

I didn't see anything promising out of any Panthers QB last year.

He did--hard to watch--so did John Elway, the player I described above.

Terry Bradshaw completed 38.1% of his passes as a rookie and threw 6 TDs vs. 24 Ints.  and had a 30.4 QB rating.  He owns a gold jacket.

No one says there's zero chance he becomes good. As you said, we're playing the odds. The odds say that a third-rounder who sucks badly in his first year and shows no promise - which no one ever said about Elway - will probably be poo forever, and should be regarded as such until he shows something.

Me neither. I thought for a minute Allen was showing he's a cool customer who doesn't rattle easily, despite a lack of talent - good backup, maybe - but then he rattled easily.

I'm all for giving Dishwater a go.

I mean he did suck but that doesn't mean he's a lost cause or we should give up on him

Dunno...I mean an XFL/Colts practice squad player just waltzed in and beat him out of number 2 spot. We going into the season with 3/4 QBs every year? Seems silly.

But Hurney’s hometown hero’s will surely prevail.

Olsen said the same thing.
