Here's a list of SB winning QB's:

Bart Starr
Joe Namath
Len Dawson
Johnny Unitas
Roger Staubach
Bob Griese
Terry Bradshaw
Ken Stabler
Jim Plunkett *
Joe Montana

Joe Theismann **
Jim McMahon *
Phil Simms **
Doug Williams *
Jeff Hostetler *
Mark Rypien
Troy Aikman
Steve Young
Brett Favre
John Elway
Kurt Warner
Trent Dilfer *
Tom Brady
Brad Johnson *
Ben Roethlisberger **
Peyton Manning **
Eli Manning **
Drew Brees **
Aaron Rodgers **
Joe Flacco *
Russell Wilson **
Nick Foles *
Patrick Mahomes **

Players with no * at all beside their name are Hall of Fame players.  Players with ** are players who were CLEAR franchise QB's who either didn't quite make the HoF grade or still playing / not yet eligible for HoF.  Players with one * are the JAG QB's who have won a SB.

Winning a SB is far, far more likely with a true franchise QB.  36 of 54 SB's have been won by QB's who ended up in the HoF or WILL end up in the HoF (Brady, Manning, Rodgers).  The number goes up to a ridiculous 44 of 54 when you add in the franchise QB's (Theismann, Simms, Roethlisberger, Manning #2, Brees, Wilson)

Nearly as interesting is the list of SB losing QB's . . . tons of JAG's.  Generally, the only thing that beats a franchise QB in the SB is another franchise QB.

There is NO WAY you pass on a franchise QB in the draft.  There is no position on the field that gives you a better chance.

Most of us realize that winning a Sb is more likely with a great qb.  The challenge is picking them.  If you look at all the qb's drafted in the top 10 since 2015, imo, only one of them (Mahomes) is a  guaranteed great qb/future hall of famer if he stays healthy.  The rest have either not lived up to the hype, or the jury is still out.  I know that many fans think Trevor Lawrence will be the next great one, but its not a guarantee.

They historically have waited though. They have a top pick and trade down or take a QB in the back of the 1st round. That’s what I meant about getting cute. The first one they took straight up was Mayfield. Which was rough last year but may still pan out.

Since 1999

Tim Couch

Brady Quinn

Brandon Weeden

Johnny Manziel

Baker Mayfield

3 of them were picked later(22), but they were all expected to be franchise QBs. In another 2 years they will be picking another QB in the first.  Picking a QB in the 1st can set you back 4 years as shown by the Browns.

Or we draft a top QB next year and trade Teddy for picks or packaged with our 2nd to target an Olineman, LT especially, in the first? We would get an upgrade at QB on a rookie deal and get a shot at protecting him in the same draft. Obviously would require Teddy to play well enough to entice someone to trade for him. With all of the dead cap clearing after this year and the cost of a rookie QB, it wouldn't be much cap wise to overcome and we would be in a much better spot the next 3 years after .

Plenty of average or terrible QBs have had “a” good/great season. So far (yes of course his career was interrupted by a brutal injury) Teddy hasn’t had any. So no I would not pass on a legit top franchise QB prospect because of 1 good year from Teddy. If anything you use that and then maybe another year of him starting while the young QB develops and then trade Teddy to pick up those assets, assuming he actually does look good for 2 years and he has value.

Keeping Teddy over a guy like Lawrence or Fields would compare similarly to the Chiefs keeping Alex Smith and not taking Mahomes...

funny you didnt say Panthers keep Clausen over drafting Cam. TL will be #1 overall

Or set you up for 10 years and at least one ring (Mahomes)

Getting an elite QB takes a lot of luck, but we don’t have a prayer without it.

We will draft a QB next year, and we should keep drafting them every year until we hit on someone.

Do we really know that Lance will come out after only playing as a freshman?

He was a redshirt freshman so this year would be year 3 in college. His decision depends on if he’s willing to risk a lost season and maybe not having an amazing year after being rusty. Right now, some sites have him being the second QB taken so top 5, maybe top 10. Kiper and McShay have him closer to 15, but QBs always go earlier and that’s also with only one year. With rookie caps, I’d go early and get paid to get better and be one year closer to the second deal.

When did Rypien make the HOF?

I mean that would be even more absurd. At least Teddy and Alex Smith have shown some success at the very least as high end backups in the NFL, or bridge starting QBs. Jimmy never showed anything that suggested he belonged in the NFL as even a 3rd stringer

Critical thinking and problem solving? Do you realize which community you're addressing right now?

It was a leap of faith!! :crying:  We are doing pretty good--I just wanted to hear opinions--stir it up a bit.  Most of the turds are hibernating so we can possibly slide some intellect under the door.  And this is kinda close to that if you squint your eyes.

Im going to base this off of a few things and it totally goes against my #1 belief. Here what it takes to break rule number one- the panthers projected 2021 starting OL. Also its harder to find a great LT than QB and that leads into this- Penei Sewell, he maybe the best LT in the last 20 years. If the panthers draft one of the top 3 QBs, he will get killed behind the 2021 OL and set this team back another 5 years. Use that pick on Penei and have a group of QBs whating to play for the panthers as a result. Just on ranking alone Penei maybe higher than the top 3 QBs.

Almost every year QBs get over drafted because of their importance.

This year there is looking to be 3 guys all worthy of top 5 consideration and we could easily be in that range.  If you have a chance to take a top QB you almost have to.

Trevor and Fields are both most likely going top-3 if the season is played or not.  I'll be curious though how the lack of a season will affect Lance.

This thread is some low football IQ poo.

If Teddy is a franchise QB, the Panthers won't be in a position to draft Lawrence or any other franchise QB.

THE END

If Teddy collects pretty stats and the Panthers still only win 4 games then he's not a franchise QB, no matter how pretty and neat his stats look. A franchise QB elevates teams as they're playing the most important position in football, period.

    • At this rate, maybe he'll be a decent 8-9 QB on his 3rd HC by year 6. Standards are so low around here now. Tepper has done some serious damage to the fan base.
