Yes, but a rebuilding team may lose despite the QB play----my concern is this--will the OL suck so bad, we will end the season not knowing what we have at QB?  For the past 3 seasons, we have not had solid QB play because we have not had solid OL play.

You do your due diligence and pick the best qb available.  I think the current model of the qb on the rookie deal and get him talent all around is the way to go in todays nfl

TB's build is a concern too.  However, RG3's frame and his narcissism caught up to him. Watched him interview and he was not about team as much as "me," but he was humble about it.  I think he was trying to create highlight reels more than win games---not getting that they are separate things---not a fair assessment, perhaps, but it was a hunch or feeling I got.  By the way Cousins, Tanneyhill, Garropalo, Carr, and Brees were all over 68.5% completions in 2019, so 70% for a short passing game is possible.

In my eyes it's all about ceiling and team elevation. Is a guy available that is believed to be able to elevate a team around him? Yes, grab him. If not, then Teddy is already that guy and a proven commodity so it may be worth holding tight.

I think that you have to draft the QB if you’re up there. Too much value in a franchise QB and more often than not, you’ll be punished for trying to get cute and build a team without one when you could have taken one. See the Browns

Not many D-1 qbs would have had his numbers at NDSU in 2019.  The kid is 6-3 225 and was 19 years old.   However, there are more FCS QBs than you think--

• Jimmy Garrappolo
• Joe Flacco
• Ryan Fitzpatrick

Some others:

• Tony Romo
• Steve McNair
• Curt Warner
• Phil Simms
• Doug Williams

He chose NDSU over Boise State and W. Michigan. Daniel Jeremiah thinks that he will be better than NDSU's Carson Wentz:

No matter how well Teddy plays, you can't pass on the opportunity to draft Trevor Lawrence... there's always bust potential, but the upside is astronomical. Passing on Trevor Lawrence could haunt this franchise forever.

What if the Chiefs had passed on Mahomes because Alex Smith was playing well? 

I think Teddy would be an ideal mentor to Lawrence and you could give the kid all the time he needs to adjust to the NFL while Teddy plays.

I am willing to give Teddy every chance possible,. But if we are picking #1 we should pick Lawrence.  I don't think anyone is disputing that

It really should come down to this.  It is also a "bird in the hand..." situation as you suggest---My personal preference?  If Teddy is good, trade back and fill OT, MLB, C, CB.  However, if he struggles, I would go QB and be happy with any of the top 3--hoping Newman at UGA develops because he has some skills--a Graham HS guy---who played at Wake.

When was the last time a #1 QB pick worked out? Is Cam the only one in the past 10 years? 

All the elite QBs right now were later picks. 
 

It takes a lot of losing and a lot of luck to get a championship QB.

Plenty of average or terrible QBs have had “a” good/great season. So far (yes of course his career was interrupted by a brutal injury) Teddy hasn’t had any. So no I would not pass on a legit top franchise QB prospect because of 1 good year from Teddy. If anything you use that and then maybe another year of him starting while the young QB develops and then trade Teddy to pick up those assets, assuming he actually does look good for 2 years and he has value.

 

Keeping Teddy over a guy like Lawrence or Fields would compare similarly to the Chiefs keeping Alex Smith and not taking Mahomes...
