Panthers waive Scarlett

I've always considered it a wasted pick whether or not Scarlett was a 5th or a 2nd. The simple fact was, he was never going to see the field under Rivera. Ron was going to ride CMC until the wheels fell off, and that's what happened. We had too many holes last season to take a flyer on a guy that wasn't going to see the field.

All signs point to poor work ethic .

Matt dont abide that.

I never understood the love some on this board had for him. He was lazy and not very good at UF, and no one expected him to get drafted.  I was shocked Hurney drafted him.

I guess Mike Davis is making the team then along with Bonnafon, CMC, and Armah.

Which was the way it seemed to be going from listening to the coaches.

Honestly they did Scarlett a favor by giving him a chance to catch on somewhere else before the season starts.

Good luck to him.

The guy did very little in college but Marty saw him run fairly well at the Combine and he had some size so we drafted him in the 5yh when we probably could've had him as a UDFA. Had he been a UDFA he probably would've never even made the roster last year.

I can't be mad though. I wanted Miami DE Joe Jackson at that pick and he's looking bust-ish for the Cowboys so far too.

I wanted Charles Omenihu or Mack Wilson.

Both who are starting and or making a impact for their team

Some fans seemed to have gotten so used to Hurney that they believe anything after the first round is a throw away pick/toss of the dice anyways. It’s sad.

After the first three rounds the odds a player will have a longer than average length NFL career drop dramatically for each round. There have been a couple of statistical studies on that.

That makes the need to nail those first three rounds much higher. Hurney's problem is the 2nd/3rd round busts. Those kill a team.

I think that it's a good sign actually.

During Rivera's era, we put way too much time and energy into JAGs.

At least it will lessen the Huddle's hyping of guys that are easily replaceable.

Stringing along mediocrity apparently isn't in the Rhule book!

Hard to call a 5th rounder a wasted pick. When you whiff in those first three rounds is when it really hurts.

Well there are a lot of 5th round or later RBs that last longer than Scarlett did...

I thought Scarlett showed some promise but yeah completely agree, Rhule isn’t going to keep guys around he doesn’t think can do the job, even if they are recent Hurney draft picks. And that’s a very good sign.

IMO, the entire draft is a crap shoot, and that has nothing to do with Hurney.  The odds are definitely better in the first, but even those are not sure things. Cant find the article now, but a year or so ago, I read an article about survival rate for all NFL draft picks over a specific period of time.  30% of first round picks were out of the NFL after four years.  For second round picks, the numbers were in the 60% range.  For third round picks, the numbers are around 80%.   And these numbers don't take into account guys who are still in the NFL, but were considered disappointments by the team that drafted them (for example Eli Apple). That is why imo, it is better to have a large number of picks to improve the teams odds of success.

Absolutely. No team drafts consistently great over time. Knowing that the odds of hitting are small, you should seek out more picks when possible.

And as a side note, just another strike against any idea of tanking. My gawd do I hate hearing people support that ridiculous notion.
