"Tough guys that like to play hard"

One found us Kurt Coleman to support the secondary, one found us Haruki Nakamura.

One put together 4 playoff rosters over 5 years with Rivera as head coach, one had 3 playoff rosters over 13 years, none with Rivera.

I'll Give Hurney the benefit of finding studs like Cam, Luke, Kalil, etc, but dude could not build a roster top to bottom. That's my biggest gripe with him. I don't even care about drafting poorly as long as you supplement the lack of solid young depth with FAs who can contribute at low cost, but he doesn't do that well. Hell, maybe Rivera didn't do it well either, but it sure seemed like we brought in better supporting FA's (Not stud, flashy, all world guys) for a solid 5 years there.

Hopefully, Rhule and company can actually identify and evaluate talent better than the previous regime. I appreciate everything Ron did but he sure didn't really develop a lot of the guys we drafted for the purpose of development.

Plus it's been, what, a a few months since we've had a good Gettleman v Hurney debate? We're overdue. After this we can talk about uniforms.

I'll just say that if Hurney can't get it done under this new regime, he's toast! I've like the players we have, and I like that the roster is churning.

Give me a team full of stars and I'll beat the poop out of a gritty try hard team, but Matt has to crank out X amount coach speak per week, so it is what it is.

Unfortunately with the cap and player contracts being what they, you cant have a team full of stars. 6, maybe 7 A's, a B or 2,  a few C's and a whole bunch of D's and F's. The whole thing is a delicate balance and one we constantly seem to come up on the wrong side of.

So...The rosters that Gettleman put together?

poo on him all you want for being an A-hole or not being the one that found the "Star Talent" but dude found cheap, hungry guys that came in and supported the superstars very well, and gave us solid depth throughout the roster.

Hurney came back and there has been a void of supporting talent and potential behind the starters, yet again.

Gentleman was better mining for diamonds in the pile of turds but some of his early successes made him overconfident, I think. He missed a lot more later in his tenure here.

I know its a different sport but the Raptors lost the Finals MVP from last year and are still a title contender because they have a team full of gritty players that play well together and play within their system. If you have a team full of dogs that compete every night you can win alot of games. Outside of Cam our offense is vastly superior now than it was in 2015 talent wise and we quietly could have one of the best DLines in football if our young guys pan out

Matt Rhule on yesterday's conference call.

"I'm just trying to find tough guys that like to play hard" He said.

"If I can find a bunch guys that are tough and like to play hard. You know, we have enough stars. We have enough high end talent guys. What we need is a gritty tough team that loves to play the game.

"I want a gritty team".

This may sound like coach speak, but I think it is a little bit more than that. It seems to be the opposite of what Ron and Marty did over the past few years. Ron and Marty would constantly look for guys that can play a specific sub package under specific conditions.

Matt seems to like a different approach. Surround his elite players with high energy guys that love the game. Teach them the rest.

I find this refreshing.

Definitely got that 2002 John Fox energy.

You wouldnt beat anyone since you arent a coach.

An actual coach, McVay, coukdnt do the exact thing vs the Pats.

Rhule will have to learn this is a classic college coach mistake. A big one at that, having gritty college teams may win you some games along with becoming a "identity". Pros is a different world with different rules. Talent > grit is the Pro world. Dealing with grown men that are talented and not as gritty is the one of the issues at hand. This has the Chip Kelly feel, he got rid of McCoy and Jackson cause they didnt fit his "football player identity". Problem was each where very talented and that what it takes to win games most times.

Rhule’s not getting rid of his stars, he’s churning the bottom of the roster.  There’s no advantage to keeping veterans who are getting worse not better or developmental players who will never get good enough .  Once you have your stars and have identified future players, why fill in with a bunch of JAGs.  Get some “Rudy’s” who set the tone at practice and make everybody play harder.  These 110 percenters add more to the total than the sum of their parts.  Rhule’s team building 101.
