Panthers in extension talks with Taylor Moton

According to PFF, he has earned it. He’s been ranked really high pass blocking wise and average run blocking. He was just ranked 20th in their tackle preview for 2020, so above average with room to improve. We have no other good OL signed past this year so we need to extend him and he should hopefully not be crazy expensive as a RT.

Did PFF actually watch our games this year? Moton may well have been our best pass blocking olineman, but in 2019 that was definitely a case of being the smartest kid on the short bus. I agree he should probably be resigned but anything more than average money for a RT starter is Hurney doing Hurney things and overpaying.

Again.

In an environment where the salary cap seems likely to take an unprecedented DOWNWARD swing.

He was by far our best. We had problems at all 4 other spots, C and LT were wide open gates at points. Not that I think Allen is a franchise QB but he got hit so many times that he was 100% hearing footsteps after the start.

Moton still graded very well on his own (better than Dawkins and about the same as Tyron Smith) and could excel given even just a little bit more competent OL around him. I’m sure the TE/RB help shaded towards LT and C because pass rushers were literally running to the QB.

I hope we do get him at a good salary but the downward cap this year isn’t going to be a permanent thing.

It may not be a permanent thing but it could very possibly be so sharp as to play havoc with nearly any contracts inked beyond this year. See my newly created thread on the topic, but a 100 million salary cap for 2021 is not out of the question. Basically my thinking is no one who isn't a franchise qb should be resigned beyond this year by teams right now because severe contraction could force cuts to players teams otherwise want to keep.

Sorry, but a $100M salary cap is 150% out of the question. Let’s not get silly here. NFLPA will stage a walkout if that happens. Entire teams would be cut. It may go down and they could put a temporary extra in and work it out to spread the dip over a few years, but they won’t wreck the NFL for a one year dip.

There's an existing CBA in place is there not? Is it possible that the players and owners could come to some compromise that meets in the middle? Sure. Do you have a lot of faith based on past interactions between these two groups that that will happen?

I don't.

There is nothing silly behind the idea that based on the current CBA the salary cap could be 100 million. With current economic realities that is far from silly. Do I think putting in some kind of temporary extra that was then spread out over a few years would be good compromise? Absolutely. Do I have faith that the players and owners will work together to make it happen?

Not at all.

Which means my approach as a gm would be to limit creating any future obligations to the fullest extent possible beyond this season, since it seems after this year all bets are off.

This is not crazy talk, it's the reality of unprecedented times. Cooler heads may prevail, but I wouldn't bank on it.

Exactly. A $100 million salary cap means no football in 2021. I don’t care about CBA calculations. I just know that players will not play for half price in 2021. It won’t happen.

How do you guys evaluate O-linemen? The extent of my analysis is:
"Did he just give up a sack?"
AND/OR
"Wow, he destroyed that LB/CB downfield!"

Honestly, if you're not noticing them much that's usually a good thing. Like you pointed out, you really only notice an OL when they make a particularly good or awful play. The same is true in a lot of ways for CBs.

I have a feeling it will just stay the same instead of increasing like normal.  Owners know the reason for declining revenue is due to covid restrictions and not because the league is losing intrest.

Smart move, let's see if Hurney has learned a single thing in his time here and doesn't back load the deal.

Virtually all contracts are back loaded. Where Hurney gets himself in trouble is when he takes those back loaded contracts and restructures them to convert base salary to bonus money freeing up cap space in the short-term by spreading the dollars out across the length of the contract but at the very steep cost of creating more guaranteed money and dead cap space in the event that you need to part with a player. He hasn't learned his lesson on that one and it's why Short is still here.
