I wan't sports like anyone else. However, in general they are just going to prolong this ordeal with the pandemic.  If only we had taken this seriously when we had the chance to get ahead of it.

Agree with this but what people really need to realize is that there is a strong possibility that College sports could be cancelled next year as well. What on earth gives people any sort of inclination to believe that the virus in this country will be under control by then? Things are worse than what they were in March and don’t forget we have flu season around the corner.

NCAA had ample time to create plans and viable options to avoid this. Big surprise, the NCAA wasn’t up to the task. I guess they bought into the trump logic that the virus would burn itself out with hot weather (LOL!) or just magically disappear (even bigger LOL). We are probably going to see some athletic departments completely disband in some schools. Bubba Cunningham, AD for UNC, said if college FB is cancelled this year Carolina would lose around $51 million dollars. Yowza. The NCAA is about as incompetent of a sports organization as there is. The people in charge are too rich for their own good. They probably want to cancel the season NOT because of Covid but because there are serious rumblings of the student athletes organizing and creating a sort of players union which absolutely strikes fear in the NCAA.

NFL season is probably next.

The NCAA doesn't do things like that. They don't organize anything. They just make money. The conferences are in the ones running the show.

That was never going to happen.  Millions still refuse to social distance or wear a mask.

My hope is that we have a semi competent and functioning government by then.

The only way football was going to happen is if we were able to get the pandemic under control as a nation. With the virus prevalent in society as a whole, there's nothing you can do that is going to make college football with their 125 player rosters and college lifestyles a reasonable option.

Fug the NCAA, but this one for once ain't on them.

Yup, agree here. there is no leadership in the NCAA. They print money and exploit student athletes. Nothing else. I’m sure there is some sort of massive insurance fund that the NCAA signed to protect the top 10% and fug over everyone else.

for most of the NCAA schools - college football season, gate/TV/sponsorships/buy games, pay the bills and create enough revenue to fund the entire sports budget the entire year. This is going to be a knockout punch for a lot of athletic departments. Schools like tOSU, Texas, UNC, BAMA, etc will be able to handle it but schools like Akron U, East Carolina, UNC Charlotte, Buffalo, Bowling Green, etc.....man I would not want to be in a leadership position at those schools this fall because they are going to have a lot of restless nights.

I disagree here with your last part. The failure to plan, prepare and be proactive is 100% on the NCAA. They cancelled March Madness basically because a few teams said they weren’t going to show up, and then it became in t best interest of the NCAA to cancel. The NCAA has so much money and resources they could have had a better plan( not to mention almost 6 months of planning). Or at least not waited to the last minute to cancel the season which is what it looks like is going to happen. I’m sure Mark Emmert and his buddies won’t be affected by this but like I said this is going to be a super kick to nuts of a lot of athletic programs.

What plan would possibly work given the amount of virus circulating in the general population? Why make the cancellation call any sooner than absolutely necessary? Hell, maybe some wildly effective therapeutic would've come along in the meantime that made college football a viable option.

I hate to be put in a position to look like I'm defending the NCAA because that's not my intent, but they really were in a no win situation that was beyond their control with this one.

I don’t know what plan they could have created but my point is they floundered 5 months in creating one. In fact it looks like the only reason there won’t be a season now is because p5 leagues are opting out. It’s a tough, slippery slope here I’ll agree with you on that but we also have poor leadership from the NCAA which is to no ones surprise.

The NCAA doesn't organize. They were never in a place to do so. They just exploit for profit. This was always in the hands of the conferences and that's exactly what we are seeing unfold.

You can argue they should but they don't.

Without treating the students as employees I don't see how you  could ever pull this off.

I mean I agree with this as well. The NCAA should be eliminated and this pandemic is more evidence.

Think it was projected that Bama not having a season would be a 2 billion economic impact.   So it also extends well beyond  the schools themselves.

But I don’t put that on the NCAA as much as I do others.

    • Our cap is going to be tight next year. Corbs and Horn’s contract are coming due, plus do we let DJ walk? Vet edges are pretty pricey…
    • If it were possible to offload that salary, do not blink just do it.  That guy might be placed on suicide watch when he is cut and no one from the NFL calls.
    • The fact that we have posters unironically talking about the playoff tells you all you need to know about the mood of this place under Andy's stewardship. And I don't disagree. The NFC South is definitely up for grabs. There are teams in this division that I worry about getting a head of steam, or they'll run away with it before we find our stride. But it seems like most are happy to stumble as soon as they look like they're about to build momentum (Carolina included). The truth is, I don't even really care about the playoffs this year. My expectations were so low for this season that I can't even pretend to be disappointed if we missed them. The important thing is, I woke up this morning, and I can't wait for Sunday. I'm excited to watch the Panthers play. I'm excited to root for our guys. I'm proud to rock my Panthers kit at the bar. I cheer - loudly even though I'm the only Panthers fan at the bar - when they do something right. I pound the table when the team makes a mistake or the other team scores. I'm not just shrugging my shoulders, rolling my eyes, chuckling ruefully, or not even noticing because I'm looking at my phone. I woke up this morning and I realized I care. That's the first time I've felt that way in over a season, maybe more. And I bet I'm not alone. That alone is reason for us to feel optimistic.
