Panthers poised to have NFL’s youngest defense in a decade

New Panthers coach Matt Rhule is tearing down the team he inherited to build it back up, and that entails a youth movement.

In fact, the Panthers will have the youngest starting defense in the NFL in the last 10 years, according to ESPN.

The likely average age of the Panthers’ 11 starters will be 23.5. That’s more than a full year younger than the previous youngest defense in the NFL since 2010, which was the 2018 Browns at an average age of 24.8.

Rhule knows there will be some growing pains.

“Most of us learn from failure way more than success, right?” Rhule said. “We don’t even have preseason games, so we have to do it from practice. We just need time and experience. We just need to keep playing together.”

Rhule hopes that in Year 1, he can start identifying a core group of players who grow into their primes together.

As long as we stay Healthy we could perform at a decent level. We had an all Vet defense last year and you see how that dumpster fire turned out. I like that we have a proven vet though at each level with KK on the line, Shaq at LB, Eli at CB (not sure about that one), and Tre at safety

Unfortunately, KK has proven to be a shadow of his former self in recent years and Eli Apple is absolutely awful.

Get ready for 5 years of mediocrity. Inexperienced team with an inexperienced coach with an inexperienced owner.

Sounds like a great time to go root for another team. We should go back to an experienced owner, experienced coach, and all vet team that end up with 5 wins rather than growing our young talent huh?

Not many "vet" teams win when your Franchise Qb is on IR for 14 games. Really wish people used their brains before posting, but hey it's the Huddle, you people drool on each other daily

Yeah, because the last 4 years of experienced team, experienced coach, and experienced owner were so much more than mediocre.

Our QB being on IR had nothing to do with our vet defense getting torn to shreds last season. “If we only had Cam Newton in this game, the other teams third string RB wouldn’t have ran for over 200 yards against us”

A bad offense 100% has negative effects on the defense. Short field position for the opponents and causing our "older vet defense" to be out on the field more than the average team causes them to tire out which leads to big plays by the opposing offense. We also lost our best DT for the entire season which does not help against the run. Football 101.
