Should've been our vet in the CB room, and never understood not bringing him back. He's not going to magically make us win (or lose) more games.  Smart guy, vet, could've been a leader in the secondary where they'll need all the help in the world.

I don’t mind us not signing him if we are just giving the young guys a chance. I just don’t get why we seem to be rebuilding (lost a ton of FAs) and still pay a guy like Short $13M this year when he’s clearly on our 1 year plan or not just start Grier when we could have had our pick of the top QB in what appears to be the best top QB draft in a long time. Oh well, here’s to not having an extra $60-90M in cap and extra picks to splurge when the young guys would be ready to compete.

Something smells here....he is a player that teams would want, including us,....he must want a ton of cash

I don't think it's that. I think it's that teams fall in love with "potential". They have young guys on rookie contracts who they think will become something or guys like Eli Apple who were 1st round picks at some point and we're supposed to be great and ended up busting. Guys like Cockrell are solid but they have low ceilings. You know what you're getting. They're not gonna help you but they're not gonna hurt your either. Teams would rather roll the dice. There are a few positions that teams will spend real money on career JAGs - QB, LT, etc.

I would too. He's better than Eli Apple.

Depends on what kind of coverage you are running.  If it's mostly zone Cockrell is much better and it's not even close.  In man, Apple might be a better fit.  No one is going to play all one or the other but if you plan on playing more man idk.

still dont get it...i would take him in a heartbeat...very solid depth

It seems like he wants way more then anyone’s going to give em. He played well actually so I understand but our overall d was ugly so I can see moving on from any jags from last season.

Tepper doesn't want to weather the profit loss that would come with really starting over. Let the franchise star walk, overpay an intriguing enough replacement so that fans don't completely check out as you rebuild. I hate that this comparison keeps applying but Jordan tried the same with the Hornets.

McCaffery played a huge part too I'm sure. Runningbacks already have shortened careers and CMC may especially due to heavy usage. Full rebuild means wasting some of his best years and who knows how many we're working with.
