I feel bad for Isaiah Simmons because it’s not really his fault for where he was drafted. he could end up having a great career but be held up to way too high standards. I worry he ends up being the Reggie Bush of defense.

I’m glad we drafted Chinn in this spot for sure. It’s a lot easier to appreciate the upsides.

Who thinks he will be OLB in 2 years?

i mean it's kinda weird because ruhle is eventually gonna be running a four safety system like he installed at baylor. that's going to be a nfl staple in about 5 years so we get to see it first hurray

like he might line up in the box occasionally but we're not going to be able to call him a linebacker like we would traditionally

it makes sense from a moneyball standpoint since safety is an undervalued position and you can load up on talent for cheap compared to other positions

i mean there's an element i guess of taking advantage of inefficiencies in the system but i think mostly its because you want more fast dudes that can hit hard as opposed to hard hitters that can move fast.

but the nfl has definitely moved to more of the way they play offense in the big 12 (with some notable exceptions) so having the guy who managed to reasonably figure it out, without a lot of comparable talent, is a huge boon.

Does Chinn remind anyone else of Thomas Davis when he got drafted? Davis was 6'1, 230lbs in 2005. Chinn is 6'3, 221lbs. Both were kind of tweener safety/linebacker hybrids that could play multiple spots on the field, big hitters, playmakers on the field.

Chinn is faster. He ran a 4.45 40 time compared to Davis who ran a 4.6 in 2005. Chinn seems more ripped and defined than Davis did back in 2005. Davis gained a few pounds of muscle and became a full time linebacker. I'm curious what the coaching staff plans for Chinn, if they plan to make him a Kam Chancellor style big safety that plays in the box, or move him to linebacker eventually.

Chancellor ran a 4.7. He was really protected by Earl Thomas. I don't think a lot of people understand how vital Earl Thomas was to the Legion of Boom. He was the crucial piece. Having a guy like that who could cover that deep third sideline to sideline let all those other guys do what they did. Everyone else in that secondary had below average athletic measurables.

Here's a dangerous combine comparison...

6'2" 230 (Chinn 6'3" 219)

4.51 40 (Chinn 4.45)

35" vertical (Chinn 41")

10'1" broad jump (Chinn 11'6")

That other guy is the late Sean Taylor. Chinn isn't just a better pure athlete, he's a MUCH better pure athlete.

Here is another comparison that doesn't bode so well...

6'4 224

I liked the pick also but we have to be careful about getting to excited over just the combine.

With that being said, there definitely seemed to be a shift this past draft in philosophy.  Whereas the Gaulden pick was more of a tape guy without measurables, this year we seemed to focus more on measurables.  Makes you wonder how much influence the current staff had.

Also it will be interesting to see the shift philosophically from a defensive standpoint.  RR seemed to value safeties less than some coaches, which is somewhat understandable considering that he played a lot of two deep and Tampa 2.  A player like Earl Thomas would somewhat be wasted under that scheme.  Conversely that scheme maximized Luke.

Looks like injuries derailed Melifonwu's career more than anything. Hip surgery, knee surgery, the guy was injury prone. Just gotta hope Chinn isn't the same.

I was definitely intrigued by Obi when he was coming out but I'm honestly not sure it's fair to use him as a precautionary tale. Injuries pretty much derailed his career from the get go.
