Matt Rhule on DJ Moore

it always seemed to me Moore got his yards in garbage time...I just don’t think he scares other teams’ defenses   I understand his yardage ranking   I just don’t seem to remember too many game winning catches or Moore being the ‘go to’ guy.

The stats don't seem to match that.  He had his best performances in games we were in up until the end.  For example, in the Seattle game, DJ had 60 or so yards in three receptions on our last drive that got us to within 6, only to watch our defense give up big chunks of yards in a futile attempt to get the ball back.

Sharing because I find it interesting that Rhule says this publicly

“D.J. has to take another step this year and be that dominant, physical go-to receiver on third-and-five that you’re going to, and in the red zone that you’re going to,” Rhule said. “Take the best matchup of the [other] team’s best corner and just dominate it – that’s the step that he has to take.”

NFL.com has situational stats breakdown. He was pretty consistent and had slightly more yards in the first vs second half of games.

He was good but his teammates on the line mentioned it.

Point me to a link. Sorry, you don't put up those numbers if you're lazy. I don't care how talented you are. Did he largely mail it in once the Panthers started jerking him around and he already knew he was bouncing? Yep.

I think criticism is fair and why stats can be misleading.  DJ Moore doesn't look like the #1 WR just yet, but the potential is there.  He has to be more clinical on third downs and establish himself as the primary option on most passing plays.

Rhule is 100% right. Moore is right now an EXCELLENT number two WR. He is not a number one. His route running will have to improve to become that.

Stats can be misleading, that is true.  But they are actual numbers and facts, anything else is simple conjecture and opinion.   There is nothing wrong with opinion of course, this board wouldn't exist without it.  In my opinion, he looked very good at times last year, especially considering what a dumpster fire our team turned into last year.

Of course, I am not a fan of the #1/#2/#3 receiver nomenclature anyway.  Offenses work best when the number one receiver is whomever is open on a particular play.    I would much rather have 4 guys with 50-60 catches each, than one guy with a hundred plus.  Its much harder to defend that way.

I remember many times throughout the season seeing tough first down grabs on 2nd or 3rd down and knowing it was DJ before i could see the number.

The other receivers weren’t doing it as consistently as him. I would like to see him turn into a dog this year.

He flashed it the game it looked like he messed up his arm. Came back after the half with a full compression sleeve on and stiff armed like 2 people on a long catch and run reception.

I agree, Offense works best when you can spread the ball around. I'm VERY excited about our receivers this season. I admittedly haven't seen Anderson play much, but I know he's taller, fast, and Rhule wanted him bad. I do know that CMC, Samuel, and DJ have the potential to make big plays anytime the ball is in their hands.

I blame much of this on the previous regime that appeared to be more interested in saving their jobs the last few seasons. Sounds like Rhule and his staff are taking a different approach which hopefully will help Moore reach his full potential.

They certainly are saying all the right things, I watched this clip from Snow, who I so want to have some beers with, and he kinda called Jackson out in thge same way.

dj is fantastic in space, but he needs to get better at securing catches that take him to the ground or away from coverage. he's not been incredibly good about making contested catches and that hurts him in the redzone where he's basically a non-factor. it's not a huge issue because we have CMC, who is sideline to sideline one of the best options in the entire league down there, but you'd love to see some explosive plays from him that end up in the endzone more frequently. i think the potential marriage to bridgewater is going to help them both and the staff might start to use moore the way the saints use thomas and just put the ball in his hands 100 times on relatively safe throws and let his YAC ability come through. this team has athletes all over the offensive side of the ball and if we can get the ball to moore, cmc, anderson, and samuel in space then we're going to have a good offense.
