Sharing because I find it interesting that Rhule says this publicly

“D.J. has to take another step this year and be that dominant, physical go-to receiver on third-and-five that you’re going to, and in the red zone that you’re going to,” Rhule said. “Take the best matchup of the [other] team’s best corner and just dominate it – that’s the step that he has to take.”

it always seemed to me Moore got his yards in garbage time...I just don’t think he scares other teams’ defenses   I understand his yardage ranking   I just don’t seem to remember too many game winning catches or Moore being the ‘go to’ guy.

I blame much of this on the previous regime that appeared to be more interested in saving their jobs the last few seasons. Sounds like Rhule and his staff are taking a different approach which hopefully will help Moore reach his full potential.

The guy had nearly 1200 yards in his second season playing with a broken Cam, Kyle Allen, and Will Grier at QB. He's our 2nd best offensive player and 3rd isn't even close. I agree with Rhule on pushing him to be great though. He has the potential.

i think moore has all the skills and ability to completely take over a game just like cmc or even steve smith...i just think he lacks the attitude/killer instinct to do it.

the panthers as a team have been in garbage time almost his entire career.

He’s right and so was Smitty earlier this year when he said he wasn’t a top WR.

I find it odd DJ looked a lot more dominant after he was called out last year. Maybe a motivation problem? Certainly isn’t skill/potential. He has it, hopefully he keeps progressing.

This is a great way to state it.  DJ Moore is clearly the 2nd best offensive player on the team, and he put up incredible stats last year when you consider all the variables.  And while I don't think he scares defenses the way Julio, Hopkins, etc. do, he does for the most part draw the #1 corner and isn't putting up stats solely against inferior competition or majority garbage time.

That being said, DJ has the potential to do more, especially in critical situations, and the team needs him to take that next step to solidify his place as a top 10 receiver in the league.  And to justify him as another cornerstone on offense to build around.

Just like the guys mentioned above (and in our team history like Smitty), defenses know the ball is going to them on 3rd down, and they still make it happen.  Time and time again.

CMC is that guy, but we need another threat we can depend on.  Even in 2005, when Smitty was all-world, we had a running game we could depend on, and while Deshaun Foster was nowhere in CMC's league, he was a counterbalance offensively to Smitty.  The 2005 playoffs could have been totally different IMO had he not got hurt, b/c it became Smitty and no one else.  It's not good for the team (or CMC's overall longevity) to be our #1 option as a RB and as a WR.

But I digress.  Rhule has looked at the film and seen what Moore is capable of, and they are challenging him to respond.  Other than maybe speed, Moore has more physical ability than Smitty.  And probably any other WR in franchise history.

Ironically, I wish Moore had more diva in him.  I know it's not his personality, but I wonder if it holds him back.  Smitty took everything personally all the time.  But that edge made him an all-time great.

He had 2 in the season opener against the Rams last year IIRC.  Was the main reason we lost the game IMO.  But I don't think he had any after that.
