Goodbye Gano

I set the over/under on games into the season before the bulk of the Huddle turns on Slye at 6.5.

I mean, this is a rebuilding season. I don't think people are expecting much, so it would be foolish to rail against the kicker, who unless he really rocks out is not going to be part of the team when we're contenders anyway.

So if you mean they start giving him poo, I think that's a fair over/under. But I'd be surprised if anyone is actually calling for the kicker to be cut when we're losing by more than a field goal margin.

Conversely, if Slye comes out the gate with some of the swagger he had before the New Orleans game, and he's nailing 55+ yarders, I want to know the over/under on how long before the board is declaring he's our kicker of the future.

Probably just as likely.

The fact of the matter is he was just an above average kicker in college and not many of those guys end up sticking in the NFL long. As you said, he's one of about 40 guys on the final roster that are temporary players.

I never truly understood the hate for Gano. He was a far above average kicker in the NFL.

More context is needed. For half his career here Rivera wouldn’t even attempt anything past 40 yards. So yea above average about right lol. Hell Slye had a better record from longer distance kicks. Top 3 paid kicker but not risking a 40+ years kick was pretty pathetic. For that amount of money, he was below average.

Its not all Gano’s fault, mainly Rivera vet fetish. Most of hate comes from him being overpaid and losing Butker for Gano. I also find it very very odd when huddlers make better personnel calls than the professions paid millions. Makes me think something is off with the FO, little suspicious.

Man now that changes are being made (and will be made too late again) you can really tell mediocrity is deeply engrained in this fanbase lord.

    • That's what I meant when I said would rather have that kind of player on a rookie deal. Vs a guy coming off of it is what I didn't say. Again, if the team wasn't in such need of meaningful talent then overpaying a little for an older blocking TE the coach could trust wouldn't be unusual. Giving up more than 1 pick is just dumb given the situation for us tho and there is still repairing what that last cap guy did before they can hit normal opperating IMO. Spending money like the peak Saints with so little talent was not a good combo.
    • We need 2 tes if we don't resign tremble.  And Mayer is a several year vet so it's not like we'd have 3 rookies in the te room.  Just spitballin here
    • I’ve been holding out on this because I knew I would just be called a homer. I’m sure some will still say I am and that we shouldn’t care about the underwear Olympics without seeing the tape. That being said…. this guy is an absolute freak. 6’3 220, 43” vertical, and 4.38 unofficial 40. And I can tell you I am not surprised in the slightest by following him since he was an under recruited high schooler putting up 232 tackles, 4 sacks, and 8 forced fumbles his senior year of high school (ONE YEAR!). He developed into the leader on the defense and was always the one making clutch plays.  He is going to be the Luke Kuechly for a defense at safety for a decade. I expect some team will draft him top 15, maybe even top 10. I go back and forth on whether you use a top 10 pick on a safety but at the end of the day, I think you pick a superstar no matter what position. I would prefer us get a top pass rusher or maybe even WR but I would be thrilled to land Nick E if we don’t get one of those guys. Would much rather have him over a guy like Jaylon Walker who is super intriguing but doesn’t have the production to back it up.
