It's in his kicking leg. The ACL primarily stabilizes your knee rotationally. There's not much rotational knee stability needed in a punter's kicking leg. It'd be much more problematic in that regard if it was in his plant leg. Though, the ACL also prevents hyperextension which could definitely be problematic in the kicking leg. I can see what he thought he might be able to play through it and get the surgery done immediately after the season and end up missing no playing time. He decided to give it a go and saw that it wasn't gonna work.
