Google can be your friend.....

Thanks, I took your advice and Googled whether masks help control the spread of COVID-19

I also found these neat news stories about COVID-19 infected people who wore masks, were in indoor close-contact situations (airplane and hair salon), and didn't infect anybody else

In case anybody is still confused, here's exactly how cloth masks help slow the spread of respiratory illness from the Stanford link:

Quote

 1. How do cloth face coverings prevent the spread of COVID-19?

Chu: In order to answer this, it’s first important to understand the concept of source control. We’ve learned that as many as 40% of people infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 may have no symptoms. But when they talk, cough or sneeze, they can still spread the virus to others in the form of respiratory droplets expelled into the air. Those droplets evaporate into fine particles that may linger. The mask traps these larger droplets before they can evaporate. So, wearing a mask regularly can prevent spreading at the source even when we don’t know we are sick. But masks are just one important way to prevent this disease from spreading. Washing your hands regularly and thoroughly and keeping at least 6 feet apart from one another are still vitally important.

Price: Many people argue that cloth masks can’t be effective because they can’t filter out viral particles, which are extremely tiny. But, as Larry explained, most of these particles leave the mouth and nose in much larger droplets that become smaller through evaporation as they move away from the body. Trapping droplets with the mask means not nearly as many viral particles escape. So, when all parties in a gathering are wearing well-constructed, well-fitting masks, it provides an extra layer of safety for everyone. If two people are wearing masks, the viral particles can travel about 5 feet away from each individual. When an infected person is not wearing a mask, those particles can float through the air 30 feet or more and stay alive for up to 30 hours.

Most didn't wear mask for the longest time due to I'm Merican and my rights. Some started wearing them once it was mandated but alot still don't. Mask do help and your a fool if you think they don't.

Before it was state law, it was estimated a little over 30% wore them in my state.

People who have gone to school for 8+ years, became medical professionals and working directly with the pandemic patients advise to wear a mask. It’s not just corona, it’s any virus. This is why your dentist, doctor, chemists, waste workers etc. all wear a mask in their profession, coronavirus or not.

Masks have bee proven to be very effective in halting the transmission of the virus from people who are positive wearing them. Those numbers get even better if both/all people interacting  wear masks.

Furthermore, other countries (and certain states) who made it law to wear a mask are doing much better than those that are not.

You ironically answered your own question as to why rates are going up, along with my first statement. Also, it has been shown hands have a huge impact in transmission, if you remove/mess with you mask and face before washing your hands...it’s counter productive.

If everyone wore a mask, washed their hands properly, and distances themselves from others, please explain exactly how a virus would spread to the degree it has? It’s impossible.

While politicians spar over the topic, a growing number of scientific studies support the idea that masks are a critical tool in curbing the spread of the coronavirus.

Take, for example, a meta-analysis of 172 studies that looked at various interventions to prevent the transmission of COVID-19, SARS and MERS from an infected person to people close to them. The analysis, which was published in The Lancet on June 1, found that mask wearing significantly reduces the risk of viral transmission.
