I got that Palardy has been solid for us, but what if he actually beats out Palardy?  We are talking about the punting position and they have one job, so it's not out of the realm of possibility.   No complex scheme or detailed playbook retention required here.  Looking at his bio, dude was solid for the Gamecocks.

I agree I’m always all for competition, I think that’s unlikely though and as mentioned above the 3 year deal is standard for UDFAs. Just due diligence and most likely just a camp body but if he does earn a spot then great.

3-year deal is standard UDFA contract

Yeah, he’s not a vet. It’s basically the same as all the other rookies signed right after the draft or in the days/weeks after. Likely very little guaranteed but it helps the team having him on a rookie scale. I’m all for saving money if you can get someone just as good.

Funny thing is that I was looking for punter rankings to see how Palardy did and Charlton was ranked 1st and 3rd for punters in the draft. WF had him as a 5th-7th round prospect, same as their top two. Might be a nice steal as an UDFA like Butker should have been. We’d save around $3.5M in cap this year and next year by paying a rookie instead of Palardy. Somewhere around $7-8M over a four year rookie contract instead of extending Palardy.

Palardy was down at the bottom of the league in net and had 3 TDs returned against him. While I know that’s not all his fault, as a directional punter that points to some poor punting. When he took over for Lee, he had some success but he seems to have tailed off the past couple years.

Missed the biggest reason, punters have no backup. Like if Palardy came down with convidthis is insurance for that. Plus given the punt returner spot is wide open, (even with Copper here) just another leg for practice. I doubt this putting Palardy on notice. This guy is a local, free agent, and can punt. Smarty Marty at work.

fug that. This is gonna be the coronaverse NFL. If Palardy gets COVID, we don't fuging punt for two weeks. Let's fuging do it.

He was really good at SC

It was a good signing and here’s hoping that he wins the job. Palardy wasn’t good last year and Charlton was right up there with Mann on most sites and he went in the 6th. One site ranked Charlton above Mann because he was less of a line drive punter and had more hang time which can lead to better coverage. Either way, good UDFA pickup who could win the job and save us around $10M over a 4 year rookie contract (RFA for year 4).

Yes, there is so little news that I looked up punter rankings.

The reply feels like it was made in the 2015 season, well played.
