CHARLOTTE — The Panthers signed undrafted rookie punter Joseph Charlton to a three-year deal on Wednesday.

Charlton was a record-setting punter at South Carolina, earning the top spot in program history with a 45.5-yard punting average. He set the single-season program record two years in a row, first with a 44.8-yard punt average in 2018 and followed it with a 47.7-yard average last season. His senior average went up nearly three yards despite punting 20 more times than he did as a junior. Charlton placed 28 punts inside the 20-yard line with just five touchbacks in 2019.

After redshirting in 2015 and backing up senior punter Sean Kelly in 2016, Charlton handled South Carolina's punting duties from 2017-19.

Charlton will remain close to home, having graduated from A.C. Flora High School in Columbia, S.C.

The Panthers now have two punters on their roster, Charlton and Michael Palardy, who has been Carolina's primary punter since 2016. Palardy owns a 45.3 yards per punt average. Last year, he averaged 46.0 yards on a career-high 74 punts.

sorry I couldn’t post the link. Not sure what this means for Palardy but I’m guessing it’ll make things interesting at cutdown time.

If Palardy gets cut, $500k in dead cap and $2.1million in cap savings.  If the new dude is pretty good, why not?

Palardy is really good, well worth his cap hit and having a lefty punter is rare but very nice.

I got that Palardy has been solid for us, but what if he actually beats out Palardy?  We are talking about the punting position and they have one job, so it's not out of the realm of possibility.   No complex scheme or detailed playbook retention required here.  Looking at his bio, dude was solid for the Gamecocks.

It is a tough thing to weigh, especially with no preseason games.  He may look better at camp, but would you trust that when the lights are on?

Literally any other position on the team I would have serious reservations about...even down to long snapper.  Remember Palardy was a relative no name when we signed him.  This is not unprecedented.

Missed the biggest reason, punters have no backup. Like if Palardy came down with convidthis is insurance for that. Plus given the punt returner spot is wide open, (even with Copper here) just another leg for practice. I doubt this putting Palardy on notice. This guy is a local, free agent, and can punt. Smarty Marty at work.

    • Kraven has awful shitty comic book movie vibes all over it. It's just more of whatever studio owns the rights to the Spiderman set, but no longer actually has Spiderman anymore. Wicked is probably no more enjoyable. 3 hour long musicals are tough to endure.
    • One of those guys who throws a pass that makes you yell "OMG" then immediately follows it with one that makes you go "WTF" 😳 Essentially the Brett Favre prototype...
    • The Giants games are an interesting comparison for sure. We could compare the Chiefs vs the Bucs as well, since at least both teams are largely the same as they are now, rather than the Giants whose coach lost his mind after losing to us. 30-24 KC in overtime. Hunt had 106 yards and Mahomes had 291. Baker threw for 200 yards, but 2 TDs. Their leading rusher had 25 yards or something. Our offense outperformed what the Bucs did vs KC, but being a division game we won't have the benefit of being overlooked. If our D plays how it did in the 4th quarter I think we can get some stops.  Can Bryce carry a second game? I'd rather not find out and have Chuba carry the load, but we'll see.
