The University of South Carolina has announced the establishment of The Nicole and David Tepper Scholars Program in the university’s acclaimed Department of Sport and Entertainment Management.

The Nicole and David Tepper Scholars Program will provide four-year scholarships to a cohort of four incoming freshmen each year. Tepper Scholars will receive $10,000 per year toward their education and will gain access to additional enrichment opportunities.

Selection for the Tepper Scholars Program will be based on academic merit to recruit the best and brightest students, with an emphasis on supporting student diversity and first-generation students. The first cohort will receive additional funding this year to provide immediate relief for financial difficulties related to COVID-19. The new program is being created with an impactful gift from Nicole and David Tepper of more than $567,000 over the next three years.

“The University of South Carolina is deeply grateful for David and Nicole Tepper’s leadership in supporting education excellence and opportunities across the Carolinas and here in Columbia,” says University of South Carolina President Bob Caslen. “This transformative and generous gift will make an immediate and lasting impact on the personal and professional success of the next generation of sport and entertainment management leaders.”

The Teppers’ charitable efforts are focused on the core beliefs that everyone deserves an education and access to health care resources, and that no one should go to bed hungry. David Tepper is the founder and president of Appaloosa Management, L.P. and owner of the NFL’s Carolina Panthers and Charlotte’s Major League Soccer team.

“Dave and I want to make sure education and the college experience is accessible during this global pandemic,” says Nicole Tepper. "This gift is designed to help students stay in school and on the path toward earning their degree. UofSC's Department of Sport and Entertainment Management is one of the very best programs in the country with an impressive faculty roster that is innovative and business focused. We have seen firsthand their industry expertise, passion and commitment to building the next generation of leaders in our field. We hope this gift will ensure continued personal growth and outstanding career preparation for UofSC sport and entertainment management students.”

The university’s Department of Sport and Entertainment Management is recognized as the No. 1 program in the nation and has built a roster of world-class faculty and alumni. The first cohort of four Tepper Scholars will be selected from the more than 300 freshmen who have been accepted to the degree program for fall 2020. Future cohorts will be recruited for fall 2021 and 2022.

“Our students are incredibly fortunate to learn from industry leaders, and this powerful new partnership with Nicole and David Tepper will shape the future of sport and entertainment management for generations to come,” says Matt Brown, chair of South Carolina’s Department of Sport and Entertainment Management. “We are deeply grateful and very excited for the young people whose lives will be changed by these innovative programs and scholarships.”

The Department of Sport and Entertainment Management is part of the university’s College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management and offers bachelor’s, master’s and Ph.D. degree programs. More information on the college and its degree programs is available at sc.edu/hrsm.

Basically a bribe to gain favor with SC politicians and lawmakers. kudos to Mr Tepper though for looking out for the Less fortunate little guy (SC) and helping people in need - because I’m sure there are a lot of them in that state.

My brothers and I did this as a gift for my fathers 70th birthday.  He was a professor at USC Upstate.  We let him set the scholarship criteria (business major & not a freshman) and we still contribute every Christmas as part of our gifts to him.  If you have the means, it's a great way to help others.

"This pandemic has put a lot of people in a tough spot, particularly students who are trying to complete their education and earn their degrees,'' Tepper said. ‘'This institution means a lot to this community and we look forward to building on our relationship in the future."

Mr Tepper just gave HBCU Johnson C. Smith (Go Bulls!) $250k to help deal with the Corona virus. I bet @ECUPantherFan @45catfan and @bull123 have a serious problem with this.

Um... no?  I think it is extremely generous.  With JCSU right in his own backyard, I think it’s a good idea and builds goodwill in the community.

Thanks for the free pub.  #obsessed #rentfree

Good for JCSU.  Unlike 4Corners, I'm not eat up with hate and let people live in their head every waking moment of the day.   Again, you are very transparent.

    • If we are going to spend the money anyway, maybe the signing is not as bad as it seems.  Mays outperformed Corbett (before his injury and if you go back to last year, Corbett has been below average) and then Christensen took the job and Mays quickly took it from him and never looked back.  He could use improvement reaching to the next level (LBs) but picking up stunts and blitzes---he was surprisingly good.  Run blocking needs some work, but he is 25.  Corbett, in my view, should be G/C depth and if Mays steps back, he is there.  Mays should start because this team is building for the future and 30 year old players are not building blocks.  We shall see.  That is how I think about it, but there are many factors we do not know. Having said that, I like what Zavala is doing, and I do not want to bring in someone who would take opportunities away from him.  Zavala was really good at RG down the stretch, and in limited duty, was awesome. In fact, we have a guard from the PS who played briefly and did well, but he only played a few plays.  He is 25 and I recall that fans of his former team were upset when we signed him.   Maybe as the backup center only (Corbett).  You need 2 centers to run practices efficiently.  I cannot say enough about the OL coaches on this staff.  What they have done is overshadowed by the Lewis / Hunt signing.  Mays, Ekwonu, Zavala--impressive growth.
