Brian Burns: What to watch for in 2020

This is old, but a nice analysis of Burns' potential and shortcomings that he needs to overcome.

Even though Burns had 7.5 sacks last year, I think (not knowing or remembering all details) that Rivera and co. did not know how to play him and instead, RR went with his veterans (Addison, Irvin) and kept Burns on the wrong side of the chalk too much. 

Enough of what I think---this is an interesting video--even if you have seen it before--because it helps you gauge BB's development vs. the run and how (if at all) his bull rush is coming along.  This helped me understand what good DEs read when rushing the passer--I thought I knew, but this shows it pretty well.

If you go back to October 2019, Jeremy Igo started a thread titled, "Just how good is Brian Burns anyways?"  Thanks to RR and his veteran-loving tendencies, we are about to enter year 2 and the question is still valid.

Time to enjoy something about football and not statues, epidemics, or real estate transactions.

I don't think breaking his hand punching the ground helped a lot with his PT.

I get it--but I was not sure how much of that was injury, and there have been players on the edge who played with a cast.  Details are unknown, as mentioned.

That is what I was thinking--- not the smartest move, but then a dumber move...

Yeah but I think that doghouse was a convenient excuse not to play him. I strongly suspect that it was the sort of move that in a rookie, Rivera would characterize as foolish and hotheaded, but in a veteran, he might have said "I love his passion for the game" and let him play with the cast on. Moot point either way now that Rivera is gone, but this is just what my gut says.

My guess:

Our defense was playing poorly, especially against the run.   Burns was playing poorly against the run so makes sense to reduce his snaps.

Or at least that was RR way of trying to fix the defense, we all know he is big on stopping the run.

BB was shelved because rivera, especially once it was obvious the season was going off the rails, wanted to let the veterans staring at their last contracts to get a bunch of good tape out there. 

Irvin especially was just going for sacks at the end of last season and just quit playing the run. I will never forget him abandoning his lane chasing russell wilson and freeing up a window for the game sealing first down conversion.

The guy has upside but he needs to stay healthy and develop strength and that bull rush move. I really enjoyed the breakdown.

McCoy too.  He had 5 sacks, 10 tackles and was in on something like 65% of the snaps.

I thought it was good and fair.

He’s still the same guy.  A year in the league.  He’s a stand up edge or OLB in a 3/4.  
 

Unless he goes all John Randle, and somehow produces regardless of limitation, he will be a great pass rusher and get blown off the line on the run or trucked by the RB.

I'm actually pretty excited about him bc he isn't the typical Panthers edge guy imo. Gross Matos fits that profile much more clearly, he seems to scream Greg Hardy or Charles Johnson type, while Burns looks to follow in the Robert Mathis mold where all i care about is him eating QBs. I mean I hope he's good against the run, obvi, but we drafted that dude to get the passer and I'm okay with getting as athletic as possible at key positions.

I see that--of course, his play could be a bit limited as a one-trick pony.  Even so, the bull rush is part of that trick, and I think it will come with strength and experience.
