Not to derail the thread here but one thing that would go A LONG way in rebuilding and helping our country is to do away with non disclosure agreements. It’s almost a get out of jail free card for the wealthy. We need to hold people accountable especially people who are supposed to be leaders in our community.

Nobody has to sign them.

that's true, but the financial disparity between the parties is such that people will decide the price of their silence and in so doing protect a person of wealth that has done terrible things that the public should know about if they are indirectly supporting this person with wealth accumulation. money should not be able to insulate you from consequences.

This is lost on so many people.

They (the monuments) were put up as a means of intimidation.

Mitch Landrieu said it quite well

We hate the Saints for sure.  But this Mitch gets it and delivers with a royal flush

Yes, the statues and confederate flags were put up in the 60s as a direct opposition to civil rights movement and desegregation.  This is the "History" that so many want to see kept?

you can do it. give it a shot. make some terrible argument

Why should I? It’s obvious from your posts you are very ignorant and just spouting off about things your talking about. You first talk about people don’t/can’t read and then follow into a tangent about how my ancestor or anybody during that time was a racist. You have no idea what your talking about. You have probably never read a single book on the subject and hence your not worth my time. Because any argument you will make is based on what you feel like is correct and not what actually is.

Not wasting my time with you

Heard tonight on local news that Tepper had been told that there were murmurings about pulling the statue down so he decided to take it down himself. Ah yes, for public safety.

So ............... who do you think on the Charlotte City Council (who would be of a like mind) worked with Tepper so he would 'hear' these rumors third or fourth hand and remove the statue?

Pretty sure tepper has an account on the huddle.

I might be the first one to break this to you, so brace for it, but there's a pretty good chance that your ancestor was a racist. the country basically picked teams on "for the slaves" and "against the slaves" terms. you may call that an oversimplification (which you wouldn't because you don't know that word) but if so not by much. there's a lot of dark moments in the course of human history so it isn't surprising that there are holdovers that hide their racism in their heart like a sacred object and enjoy their secret brotherhood when they pass another confederate flag flying loser. they have this overly simplified version of reality where the whites were clearly superior and empowered and apply that fantasy to their present situation of being culturally irrelevant and openly mocked.

having to jump through all these hoops and contort yourself to find an alternate explanation for why things like the flag aren't supposed to be offensive is simply the difference between connotation and denotation. see, a connotation is what feeling a thing creates. its intangible meaning to others that see it. what 99.9% of people see when they see the confederate flag is a person stuck in racism so thick they have to find a way to let other people know that they too hate black people and wish so much hadn't changed since those days. the rest of the 0.1% are people that say "it ain't racist we swear!" and turn around and high five their 3 other hunting buddies with 5 teeth between them.

so yeah, taking down these statues is pretty mandatory for moving forward with progressive thought. because we should be ashamed that keeping other human beings and working them like animals was something that we had to go to war to understand how bad it was. the people that put those statues down did so with the full intention of honoring those people who fought and died for their concept of white supremacy. they wanted to make them heroes. that alone is reason enough to tear them from the ground.

Did you read a single post I have posted? I said I’m all for taking statues down on private and public property and your hear posting why I don’t want the statues down, by calling me a racist. Thanks. You have shown reading comprehension does not work well with you. My entire argument was on “battlefields”

ps: using big words to make you look smart actually doesn’t make you smarter.

preservation of the embarrassment that was slavery in any variety shouldn't be anyone's priority. wars were a needless, terrible event where a lot of people died that shouldn't have died because they believed in something stupid or were so simple they didn't know any better. i don't see the purpose of commemorating that in any capacity.

You talk like a robot that is programmed to say a certain thing and anything else go through one ear and out the other. I’m done talking to you.

Racism is not hereditary because it is a lifestyle choice so don't put accusations on someone that you have no clue about them and how does anyone know if you are one of those that have ancestors that were racists.

What is the "charlotte southern wine and cheese crowd"?

All the folks who approved of Richardson's "decorum" rules for the stadium like not taking your shirt off and who were there primarily to see and be seen rather than actually focus on the game. If you're looking for them, they often live here:
