We ran plenty of two TE sets in the past.  Olsen was hurt a bunch too, remember?  Thomas had a couple of good games with Olsen out, primarily because he wasn't seen as a threat by defenses.  He should have feasted in all those games.  Sure, let's hitch our boxcar to the Thomas train and see where that gets us.

A one-year deal for a proven vet...like we already have plenty of, would do just fine to allow the defense to get a year together under their belt while giving the offense just one more weapon.  As I already stated, our best defense this year is going to be our offense.

Ian had 36 catches for 333 yards in 2018 when Greg was out.  As a rookie.  With a QB who couldn't throw the ball more than 20 yards downfield.  He had 16 catches for 136 yards last year.  With a healthy Olsen.  The problem was not that Ian was bad last year it's the way Norv, and some other OC use TE.

I don't know for sure what Norv uses to call TE so I am just going to call them Z ( Greg) and H (Manhertz).  The Z is used as a reciever and a blocker while the H is used mostly as a blocker in Norv's offense.  So when we had 2 TE on the field last year, under Norv's offense the H did not need to be a receiver and since Manhertz is a better blocker they used him as the H.  It would not suprise me if Ian was not even taught the H position and instead was just taught the Z.   So when you have 2 TE on the field unless Greg was hurt it was never going to be Ian Thomas with him.  It was always going to be Manhertz.

That is what happens when you have an OC who has been coaching in the NFL for 1 way for 30 years.  They keep doing the same things when the personnel changes because it has worked before and it will work again.

We always used a blocking te for our second, thats why when Olsen was there Ian was our #3 TE, and when Olsen was out he was our #1 TE

Armah is also an endangered species.  LSU went away from a FB--for years they had 4 or 5, but they carried 1 last year.---but he could become more of a hybrid.

Armah isn't going anywhere.

He's an athlete, and that's what has value. He played multiple positions on offense and defense in college and high school.

So we are anointing Thomas our #1 TE then?  I mean he had nothing for competition. Let's see here, we have a returning practice squad guy, a dude off the street with 1 catch in the XFL and two UDFAs.  By your own (and Bababoey's) admission, the (Z) and (H) are almost like two different positions, so Manhertz and Armah aren't really competing for the same spot with Ian.  Sure when it comes down to how many 'TEs' we keep on the roster, but that's about it.

Bring in a veteran and make Thomas earn the spot and not just hand it to him.

New offense we don't know how the TE will be used by Brady.   It might not make a difference how many TE we have because we may or may not use them as much.

True, but even then Manhertz may be in danger because he was definitely a Ron Rivera guy.   I have never seen much out of him to understand why he sticks every season.  He's like the Bersin version of TEs...nothing special, but manages to hang around year after year.  For the record, his blocking isn't all that great.

But I digress, Thomas needs some competition.  At this point in offseason, relatively cheap one-year deals shouldn't be too hard to find.
