Some moves we can make to free up cap space

Last thing we need to do is restructure contracts and start backloading salaries of players into their final year. We are not going to be good this year, so let their contracts play out and then we can cut them next year if the dead cap isn't too much. Let's see if Short will give better effort than he has the past couple seasons and can return to being a top interior Dlineman. If not, send his ass packing. If Paradis was not playing 100% healthy and plays better next year, then we have him another year at a good price. If not, cut his ass after next season.

Good with extending Moton, Samuel no way unless it is a super team-friendly contract.

Good with the 3 cuts mentioned.

That’s all you need to read to know this article was awful. Restructuring to save cap space? All the crap about a huge dead cap year this year and we want to guarantee Short more money overall by restructuring while we are rebuilding? Let’s make sure we pay an extra $27M to Short. According to the article he’s earned every penny of his contract with 3 sacks total in 2018 and 2019. He led that 2018 D to that stellar end of the year run and he’s been a phenomenal mentor to Butler. SMH. We are wasting so much cap on him.

The best part of this garbage article is that we just restructured Short in 2019 making it harder to cut him this year. I’ve never seen a contract restructured two years in a row for a guy who’s had basically no impact on the team two straight years.

Restructuring contracts isn't necessarily a bad idea if you want to keep a player you value. The issue is largely about whether guys like KK and Paradis fit into your long term plans. KK for example has been relatively healthy and productive especially when he had help in the form of Star. A torn rotator cuff isn't a bad injury for a linemen to recover from. So there every likelihood that with Brown starting in the middle Short will have a good season. I can see the point of not restructuring him if we can handle his cap hit without it. But honestly when you look at many backloaded contracts, they were designed with the likelihood that they would be restructured as Shorts contract had already been. With Lukes 10 million and letting Gano go and perhaps Davis, we don't need to mess with Paradis or Short to get the savings to sign who we need. We can find the money elsewhere. But I totally disagree with cutting either Short or Paradis given the dearth of veteran leadership on either line. And I really do believe we will be better than people think we will be.

How many wins are you expecting, and would you be willing to put a little wager down?

Exactly. You don’t restructure a player like KK. Accept he’s done and pay the price, sacrifice the now and not the future when the team is already rebuilding several areas. It’s sad but Kk Paradis and Gano will hurt this team when talking about actually paying who we should (Moton). And M Kalil...good lord how are we still paying him.

Sure hope the new cap manager proves some worth because Hurney is god awful.

What you said is the golden point.  If THIS year or next year was our golden run, you extend KK before free agency and then use his current money on stacking the deck.  But with our situation, you simply eat the money and move on.

I am not sure that wins or losses will tell the whole tale of how good we will play given our schedule and playing in the toughest division in football. But I think we will be better than what we saw in 2019 and won't be everyone's get better game like last year.  It would be hard to quantify our wins and losses without at least seeing them play in preseason if we have one.
