Thanks to the NFL's virtual offseason, players and coaches alike have had a unique time familiarizing themselves with the playbook and each other the past few months. For Panthers coach Matt Rhule, leaning on past experiences with Teddy Bridgewater has added important context as the two continue to strengthen their bond.

During his appearance on Around The NFL on Friday, Rhule explained why he and Carolina's front office viewed Bridgewater as a fit for their system. Being the passionate speaker that he is, Rhule spoke to his new QB1's character and influence.

"The best players in the world bring out the best in their teammates and I can tell you, since free agency started, the amount of the guys that want to come and play with Teddy has nothing to do with me or anybody else," Rhule said. "They want to be a part of what he's doing 'cause he brings out the best in people."

Rhule admitted that he's admired Bridgewater from afar long before circling him as the guy to replace Cam Newton in Carolina. As a first-year head coach at Temple in 2013, Rhule recalled his Owls losing to Louisville and getting "destroyed" by Bridgewater, who compiled 348 pass yards and two touchdowns. Seven months later, he was selected 32nd overall in the draft.

 
 
 
 

From there, Rhule said he followed Bridgewater's NFL journey, and respected his perseverance and attitude, something he gleaned firsthand from an encounter the two had in late 2019. One day while Rhule's Baylor Bears were practicing at the Saints' facility in preparation for the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans, then-Saints backup Bridgewater stopped his individual workouts to speak to sophomore receiver Tyquan Thornton. Rhule said that Bridgewater apologized to him for interrupting walkthroughs to talk to his fellow Miami native, to which he informed him wasn't a problem in the slightest.

"I sat there and told him, 'Teddy, I just want you to know how much respect I have for you. Having coached against you, having seen what you've done, having seen the way people respond to you. Man, I just wish you the best,'" Rhule told Bridgewater. Fast forward a couple months later and now the pair are working in tandem.

Bridgewater has overcome multiple hurdles in his career but, at 27, he's getting the chance to start anew in Carolina and come into a season as the undisputed leader for the first time since 2015. His new coach is more than eager for the chance to see Teddy do his thing once again.

"I believe so wholeheartedly in who he is as a quarterback. I believe in his abilities, I believe in his arm strength, I believe in his accuracy, I believe in his decision-making but, beyond that, I know he's going to make everyone else that much better."

I don’t think Cam created that much drama. It was his cult following.

What’s weird is all the ‘Panthers fans’  who made cam threads 15 pages long are gone and this thread about the Panther’s new starting QB will be lucky to reach 2-3. Cam sure had a fanboys following, impressive on his part, but as someone who roots for the team, I just wish we had as many supporters for the new Panthers QB. Can’t say I didn’t see this coming though. 

No on seems to have any controversial issues, cares about weapons, olines or receivers for Teddy etc...it’s like they all went away almost over night.

I don't understand the narrative that CAM was a diva and/or created drama.

From the day he arrived in Charlotte 99% of his quotes I've read were positive.  99% of his off field actions have been positive.   We were pretty darn good with Cam on the field too until the injuries started.

Did he dress like a clown?  Yes.   Did he pout like a child when things didn't go his way (post super bowl interview)? Yes.   How is that different that from Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, and any other young male who has been idolized since they were teenagers?

I must have missed all of his anti-team rants and all of those interviews where he made it clear it was all about him and not his team mates.   

Some of you guys act like he was a bigger a-hole than Steve Smith, and that just ain't so!

Smith is the All time Panther asshole, as voted by the masses!!

Once, Teddy had a chance to be a great starting QB in the NFL and misfortune took that away from him. He's getting that chance again now thanks to his hard work, abilities and patience. I'm really looking forward to seeing him shine out there... something tells me he may be better than ever at this point. He's certainly had a hard journey to get here, but that's always part of the hero arc.

Very well said!!! I’m looking forward to a new offense. I think Teddy might not be as exciting as Cam, but I don’t think he will routinely throw easy passes 3 feet over the head of open receivers or throw it behind them on slant routes. Teddy was always accurate, and looked good in a system that Joe Brady is going to run. This offense is going to be better than people think.

      Qbs aren't defined by physical abilities. Brady, Brees, Manning, Montana, Warner,.....doesn't seem to correlate.

      If we are going to spend the money anyway, maybe the signing is not as bad as it seems.  Mays outperformed Corbett (before his injury and if you go back to last year, Corbett has been below average) and then Christensen took the job and Mays quickly took it from him and never looked back.  He could use improvement reaching to the next level (LBs) but picking up stunts and blitzes---he was surprisingly good.  Run blocking needs some work, but he is 25.  Corbett, in my view, should be G/C depth and if Mays steps back, he is there.  Mays should start because this team is building for the future and 30 year old players are not building blocks.  We shall see.  That is how I think about it, but there are many factors we do not know. Having said that, I like what Zavala is doing, and I do not want to bring in someone who would take opportunities away from him.  Zavala was really good at RG down the stretch, and in limited duty, was awesome. In fact, we have a guard from the PS who played briefly and did well, but he only played a few plays.  He is 25 and I recall that fans of his former team were upset when we signed him.   Maybe as the backup center only (Corbett).  You need 2 centers to run practices efficiently.  I cannot say enough about the OL coaches on this staff.  What they have done is overshadowed by the Lewis / Hunt signing.  Mays, Ekwonu, Zavala--impressive growth.
