Panthers make more roster moves

Just a thought, since retirement acts like a cut, I wonder if the Panthers asked Luke to hold off filing the paperwork until after June 1, so it would function like a June 1 "cut"?

Possibly, it wouldn't affect Luke either way. If thats what the team wants, then I don't see why he wouldn't.

The thing about not cutting him and him not filing the paperwork is that as long as he is on the roster, which he is now he carries a 15 million dollar cap hit and takes up a roster spot.  For a player that you hope will change his mind and come back and play.

If he files the paperwork he basically cuts himself.  If he doesn't then you could carry that all year long and lose a roster spot.

We dont know if he filed the paperwork or not, but if he hasnt then he isnt retired and he would basically be a hold out.  As long as he doesnt play he doesnt acrue seasons and the contract is still valid, no reason to cut him.

Im still salty about Luke retiring, feels too much like when Pep leftd. Phil Snow has never coached or called plays in the pros and hes 64. Luke would have sure been SUPER helpful for the upcoming season. Panthers had a big time need and the best guy is gone.

Holdouts count against the cap.  Holdouts count a an active roster player.

Dude you are way off on this, you don't cut retired players. Especially ones under 30 and a future Hall of Famer. It makes 0 sense and has no advantage to do so.

Your missing the whole thing.  When a player retires and fills out the paperwork and send it to the offices at the NFL you don't have to cut them.  They really cut themselves.  How you treat them is as a cut player.  You can submit the paperwork and claim the player retired before june 1st, which mean all the dead money hits that year, 2020 in this case.  Or you can submit the paperwork and claim the player retired after june 1st, which means some of the dead money hits this year and the rest hits next year.  If you don't submit the paperwork at all the he stays on the roster and your team takes the full cap hit that that player is due and you actually have to pay his salary for the year.

It's not about cutting him.  You don't have to do that.  It's weather you claim he retired before or after June 1st.  If the Panthers claim he retired before June 1st his cap number this year is almost 12 million this year.  If you claim it was after June 1st it is 4 million this year and like 8 or 9 next year.  Right now he is still on the roster and his cap number is 15 million.

Your talking about apples and I was talking about trees the whole time and you did not know what the hell I was talking about.

Yep.  That's exactly what happened!

For the record, OTC was correct in their cap number (as usual) and Spotrac was incorrect already adjusting the cap figure for Luke's retirement and as we all know June 1 cuts affects the cap differently.
