Obviously before I knew it was a one-year deal.  I just knew he signed with us.

Fair enough, I assumed you saw the Newton tweet that SpecialJuan had posted ~26 minutes before your post that had said it was a 1-year deal.

Was he getting penalized for being aggressive with press coverage or from getting beat?

It was largely a mixed bag. Like that @ Falcons game last year where he got called for two DPI’s on Ridley, one was him being aggressive and the other was from him getting beat and panicking.

The 2 DPI’s I referenced are in this video at 2:04 and 3:00 and both include a replay with Dungy providing analysis.

He actually had got called for 3 DPI’s that game, but the last one was in the red zone and was only for 5 yards.

Yea, theres a different level of suck that would be needed to "Tank for Trevor"

You mean like depending on rookies instead of having Luke, Addison, Olsen, Bradberry and others? Not having a full offseason is really going to hurt such a new team and new coaches. We don’t have to do much to tank for Trevor. That said we could have easily done it if we held back on the early FA.

Just look at our depth. If we have 1 key injury we could be in dire straits. If we have OL injuries like 2016 or have trouble with health we are a bottom dweller. Some of our key FAs and returnees already are coming off lots of missed time last year. Let’s not pretend that Williams and Paradis gives you the warm fuzzies on Short and Okung (both 31).

I mean, let’s be honest, in the second halves of the last two years we were 1-15 and the 1 win was against a resting/Breesless Saints team. We aren’t that much above the bottom and we’ve got a ton of rookies in the staff and team.

I know some people are hating on this but these are the types of signings I want to see.  I want to see what the supposed “ultimate motivator/ teacher “ that Rhule is supposed to be work magic with some of these guys.  No team can sign nothing but pro bowlers.  I want to get young underachievers and work some magic with them.  Some will work out.  Some will not. But it is worth it to find a couple gems before they take off.

You're negativity cant reach me. There's plenty to be optimistic about this upcoming season.

You can’t backload a 1-year deal though. LOL.

In a sense you can. You can put in incentives. I dont know about the rules now, but in the past you could put in clauses that hit on the following cap year. The new league use to start on may 14th(i think), smart GM would always have some funny worded stuff for around that date. Plus you could sign a two year deal, thats truly a one year with all sort of stuff that hits on two year without the player on the roster.

I bet mickey knows how to "back-load" a one year deal.

Ive blasted marty over and over for his terrible moves. Also I have given credit when he pulls a good move too. (I wish USA would learn this).

Marty signed Derrick Brown, I believe the first first rounder to sign. Once that was complete, it dropped the cap space figure to 3,300,000=/-. That took away any agent trying to squeeze the panthers for more bucks. There is simply no room, so either you can take this deal nor bugger off. If they came back with something like "just make space". Sure but it will be for picks 2-7 first, then we'll see what is leftd over.

After the deal with Las vegas died, Apple was ice cold. That was for 6 million, panthers deal was for 3 million. Im not a Apple fan, still after the giants mess, he didnt have any of those issues on the iants. Mike maycock and gruden did their homework and thought he was worth the 6 million. One of the sides didnt like the contract wording, so he remained a FA. Marty makes some moves and gets a 25 year top ten old nfc south vet CB for a small gamble of 3 million. not bad, not bad at all.
