BREAKING: Panthers sign CB Eli Apple

GOAT

Recommended Posts

$3M for a soon-to-be 25 year old CB with 4 years experience is hard to get mad at.

IMO, there's two sides to Eli -

1 - He was drafted at 20 yrs old, played for a big market team as an overdrafted top-10 pick and was too immature playing for his hometown with the spotlight on him.

2- He is immature, despite having the measurables and tools to be a CB1 and will flame out on his third team in five years..... at the age of 25.

2020 is an audition year for a lot of guys as to whether they are part of our core moving forward. Lots of young high upside guys that could be part of an up-and-coming franchise being built the right way. Can't knock the approach.... a few gems should shake out of all the stones being sifted.

Not a bad signing for y’all. He was playing well last year until he tweaked his knee on the ****ty field in Chicago and then played on that gimpy knee until he injured his ankle against the Titans in Week 16 before missing Week 17 and the playoff game.

The thing I’d be concerned with if I were y’all is if he’ll continue playing solid while healthy, or will he revert back to how he was with the Giants when he was their CB1 and not benefitting from playing opposite of a CB like Lattimore?

However after the deal fell through with the Raiders, I was hoping we’d re-sign him for cheap depth in case something happened to Lattimore or Jack Rabbit. But definitely could end up being a good move for y’all.

And we have a new cap manager.  If the Saints can continuously sign these lucrative deals with literally no cap room, other teams have figured out how to do that too.  I'm sure this new dude (forget his name) knows that trick.  You do know you can back-load deals too.

Again, I'm not talking Darius Slay or James Bradberry deals, but it would not shock me in the least if Apple's deal is 3+ million a year.

You can’t backload a 1-year deal though. LOL.

Were any of those bad games against Tampa or Atlanta? Seems relevant since, ya know, he's gonna be in the same division again.

2018 vs. Falcons: Apple saw a lot of action against Jones (since Ridley carved up Crawley and P.J. Williams in our first game that year and we had to stick Lattimore on him after halftime to slow him down which led to a similar gameplan in the second game) and he did moderately well; surrendered a few intermediate passes (~10-15 yards) to Jones but nothing too bad and he also had a PBU but don’t remember when

2019 vs. Falcons: Apple saw more of a variety than the above mentioned game and he didn’t do too bad except 2 plays: one he got torched on a deep crosser by Jones right before half (which was Jones’ first catch of the day) and then he got worked by Ridley later on with a double move but got bailed out by a Marcus Williams INT (had he not, it was a TD)

2019 @ Falcons: Apple mostly saw a combination of Ridley to start the game and then Blake after we moved Lattimore onto Ridley since Jones was out; he gave up a few passes but nothing big; Apple got tagged with 2 DPI’s covering Ridley though, the first being great coverage where he essentially ran Ridley out of bounds and away from the ball but just had a bit too much contact, and the second when Ridley just blew by him when he was trying to sit on a short route and could’ve been another case of Marcus Williams bailing him out if the flag had not flown

———

2018 @ Buccaneers: Apple saw a lot of Godwin (since we mostly like to keep Lattimore on Evans) and Apple kept him quiet by looking at the box score, Godwin had 1 reception for 13 yards and Apple had 2 PBU’s that day

2019 vs. Buccaneers: Apple mostly drew Godwin a good bit this game as well with some snaps on Miller, but we also played a lot of deep zone (based on how Arians likes to run his offense) and our pass rush feasted on Winston; Apple did give up a junk time TD to Godwin with :19 seconds left in the game but he had decent coverage and Vonn Bell came up to assist with a tackle and took he and Apple out but besides that play, Godwin’s other success that day came at the expense of our zone coverage

2019 @ Buccaneers: Apple had another relatively quiet day thanks to the deep zones we employed; Lattimore also got dinged so he missed a large portion of the game and resulted in P.J. Williams taking over on the opposite side and Winston tried to take advantage of that matchup a bit more; Apple ended up giving up a catch to Brate and then one to Evans late in the game which he then whiffed on a tackle and let Evans get to the 2 yard line but he again tallied 2 PBU’s that didn’t show up in the highlights

———

And just for fun...

2016 Saints @ Giants: Apple mostly was lining up at LCB from the short video I saw and he got whooped by Michael Thomas on back-to-back posts for 40 yards (17 yards and 23 yards) in a little rookie-on-rookie crime (it was also both their 2nd career NFL games); I’m surprised we didn’t go to that matchup more (especially considering Jack Rabbit was on the other side of that defense) but at the same time we didn’t exactly know the monster Thomas was going to become yet; now I’d expect Brees to go at it until the Panthers prove they can stop it; his statline also says he had a PBU but it didn’t show in the video

2017 Giants @ Buccaneers: Apple saw a mix of Evans and Godwin with some snaps on #11 (don’t remember who it was); he gave up a 7-yd TD to Evans on a fade in man coverage and there was another where it possibly could be him that surrendered a TD to Brate on a deep post but I think they may’ve been in zone and Winston just fit it between Apple and the safety

2018 Giants @ Falcons: like the Buccaneers game above, Apple saw a mix of Jones, Sanu, Ridley, Hall, and even Hooper; he surrendered a catch to Jones on a nasty curl at the sticks and 2 additional catches to Ridley as well but the Giants defense had far more problems than that in this game

I remember the 49ers game being especially bad-think he had half his Season PI penalties in that one game.  But hell, Bradberry looked like trash against SF too

Apple didn’t have any penalties against the 49ers.

I wouldn't say he and Bradberry are drastically different in talent by any stretch.  I'd give Bradberry the nod, but not by much.

I could agree with that assessment.

Beyond that, he can offer us some insights into the New Orleans defensive schemes and tendencies.

Saints defensive scheme:

a.) If Lattimore is on the field, roll safety coverage to Apple

b.) If Lattimore is not on the field, play 2 high and pray they don’t throw it at Apple

Was he getting penalized for being aggressive with press coverage or from getting beat?

A one year deal is great for Apple. Light it up and someone is going to pay him big money. As for the “Tank for Trevor” nonsense. How are you going to tell players like CMC, DJ Moore, Shaq etc that you aren’t trying to win games this year to draft a rookie with potential? You want these players to just throw away a year of their potentially short careers? It sends a bad message to the team and can ruin its culture.

I mean, they were pretty good at losing last year.....
