Marty Hurney: bringing in a veteran CB is a priority

I’m starting to think the Panther need to hire an oline specialist. They’re glaringly incapable of fixing it, and Hurney and Gettle are completely incompetent. I really don’t think they know how.

CB is your biggest worry? Lol yea it’s bad but the oline has been atrocious for 8 out of the last 10 seasons...what will it fuging take good lord

We did hire a new offensive line coach, traded for a left tackle, and signed 2 offensive guards that started all their games in 2019, not to mention have 2 lineman coming off their rookie year who they are hoping can take a leap forward. Conversely we lost arguably our top 2 CBs and replaced them with a 4th round pick and nothing else. We went from Bradberry and Cockerill to an unproven day 3 rookie and Corn Elder. Until we sign someone else, that worries me more than our offensive line.

The 2 we signed played because the starters went down. They are solid backups, but backups nonetheless. I wouldn’t bet any money any rookie from last year steps up. The washed up left tackle we signed will be a good coach but I will be absolutely ecstatic if he can pull off just an average season. No one on the line is starter quality except Moton...that’s a fact. That’s been true for basically the past 10 years besides 1 or 2 players.

But yes speaking of this year the oline and secondary are both in bad shape. And you’re correct our coaches have a history of caring more about the oline. Hopefully phase 2 next year of the rebuild this team can finally properly invest in it.

So because they didn't get the players you wanted they didn't do enough???

Ppl really need to get off the adding more Olinemen thing until we can see if new coaching and actually being healthy and gelling will work 1st.

Yeah well although I am less than enthusiastic about Bridgewater, I don't want to see him in a wheelchair.

We definitely didn't do enough on the OL. I am willing to bet the results of this coming season will show that, as well.

I think they did the best they could realistically. Are they going to be the best unit in the league? No. Once they gel they should be an average to solid unit. Okung is an upgrade and LT, Schofield should be better than GVR, Paradis should hopefully be better after another year of conditioning on his leg, Miller is decent but a downgrade from Turner and Moton should be solid if not better with experience. Throw in Little and Daley developing from last year and we have some potential sprinkled in there. A lot of these players are one year rentals or on the last year of their contract (I think we extend Moton). They are simply placeholders until we overhaul the unit next year. Hopefully we extend Moton and see something out of Little or Daley in year 2.

I am not sure about "best they could" but when you gut a roster the way we did, it isn't going to be realistic to have no holes in a roster.

I am just glad that it is a journeyman QB that will be taking the brunt of this rather than our future franchise QB.

Yeah all things considered including gutting  our roster. It cleared up our cap for the future. I mean our offensive line is at least all capable starters who were playing last year. I think they might start off rough, but be solid by the end of the year once they get some chemistry.

We will see how capable they are. I have my doubts about a few of them. Even worse, I think our depth in that unit is atrocious.

We have a lot of cap available in the next 2-3 years but that would have really happened anyway because we had an aging team and most of those contracts were due to expire.

I am more than a little perplexed that we are not attempting to have cap space roll over from this offseason and seem to be pretty determined to max that out. As I said in another thread, I can't quite figure out if we are trying to tank/build for the future or trying to be good now. We don't seem to have a clear direction of what we are trying to do.

It is gonna be interesting, that is for sure.

He's one of the 'tank for Trevor' people, so any optimism for next season gives him a serious case of bubble guts.  I think his tummy is rumbling from reading this post.

Not true. They've both been starters essentially their entire careers, starting 60+ games each over 5 years. Last year in a combined 29 starts, they committed 4 penalties and gave up 3 sacks combined. Van Roten and Turner, in only 24 starts, committed 5 penalties and gave up 7 sacks combined. Whether you've heard of these people or not, the Panthers made an effort to address the line for 2020. As others have said, with how many holes we had to patch, I think it was a reasonable effort. But there's a ton needed to do for 2021.

Just a heads up, there is a strong possibility that the cap will not be able to roll over into next year. Due to the corona virus. We should know by mid August.

Even so, the nearly $50 million we have in dead cap space this year goes to $0 next year.   Our cap rollover will be negligible anyhow.  That would suck for teams that were planning on rolling over a ton of cap space.
