Cam is the only QB left unsigned.

And >$120mm in career earnings from contracts alone (easily 8 figs in endorsements too). Dude could sit on his couch and play Clash of Clans for a decade and still be an overwhelming success.

Think it's more likely he replaces an injured QB on a playoff team at some point midseason, though.

Ever heard about how Antoine Walker blew through every penny of the $108,000,000 he collected in contract compensation?

Some scary verbiage in this article about the "cigar club":

"No expense was spared on the project Newton and his brother, C.J., have overseen from the start. The cost, according to Thompson, was "north of $7 million" with Newton and his family footing 100 percent of the cost."

Make no mistake about, Cam's "family" didn't foot any of the costs....

Another snippet from the article:

"The goal is for the business to expand to other NFL cities, with Charlotte -- where Newton lives during the season -- at the top of the list."

I'm guessing those plans have changed!

It's kind of like a spouse talking about divorce just to win an argument, then finding out the party of the second part took the suggestion seriously.

I remember a wealthy client of ours got into an argument with his facilities manager, who had worked for the company for decades.  In the heat of the discussion, the facilities manager threatened to quit if he didn't get what he was asking for (it wasn't just personal compensation).  The client didn't even flinch, he immediately responded "I accept your resignation, please leave now."  It was stunning.

I mean yeah it's certainly possible to blow through $100mm+. Ask Iverson ($150-200mm) or, for an even more obscene number, Tyson ($400mm). But that's the exception, not the rule, for guys in the 9-figure club.

Unfortunately a good number of the tell-tale signs are present...

Family hangers-on all dressed and coiffed to perfection.

Expensive rentals which end up torn up.

Lots of kids by multiple women.

Big chunk expenditures on ill-advised business ventures like a cigar club.

Healthy car habit.

New hat every week at $2k per.

Etc...

Maybe so, but bankruptcy still isn't the null hypothesis for guys with ~$150mm in career earnings, especially if he's been somewhat exposed to equities since his first contract.

Someone will get hurt.  That team will have too good of a roster to waste a season w/ a backup.  They will bring in Cam.

Yep. Either that or some team that thinks that the answer is on the roster will be forced to acknowledge reality when practices start.

Which teams do you have in mind?

Will said teams see Cam as plug & play for the system they are running?

Let's say a team like the Chargers, Bills, Indy, etc lost their starting QB in camp.  Those teams are built to win now.   The Cam gamble to come in would be an easy decision.   But they would be renting him for a season.  But Cam could then showcase his health.

The earlier a QB goes down...the more teams become realistic IMO.

Yeah, Cam is not a plug and play QB.

If you can bring Vinny Testaverde and St. Pierre off the couch to play that week....

Cam most certainly could step in on any good team.   Frankly, IMO, it is easier to plug in a truly athletic QB than anyone.  Cam is a legit vet.  He can run a limited gameplan of any offense while he gets up to speed.  Plus, he has the added Cam centric bonus that instantly applies.
